The Stadium Of Light

Imagine what time the early leavers would start setting off if they thought they had to compete with 70 Thousand drivers instead of 40 thousand. Be half empty at half time.

Other than replacing the f***ing pink seats there is fuckall to do to the stadium. Mental to extend it further

This "breaking point" keeps shifting though.. Once it was a farfetched nightmare scenario with £50 tickets that people stated "would reduce attendances to 80´s levels.
Today I see them everywhere.
The truth of course is that the core fans are ST holders and thus pay much less, unless they support a London team Like Spurs, Chelsea or Arsenal
There was quite a few empty seats at the etihad last night. That tells me that even if SAFC get into the champions league, unless were playing Real Madrid or Barcelona, there's going to be empty seats.

In my opinion success is a factor but it is contributory to the wider issue of value for money, and therefore its going the same way as pubs. People would rather sit in their armchair in their replica shirt with a f***ing huge TV watchin football on sky in HD with a box of cheap lager from a local supermarket.

There just isn't the 'have to be there' feeling you got from going to the match 15 years ago.[DOUBLEPOST=1383783269][/DOUBLEPOST]
One word. Dortmund.
Not sure if this is the point you're making but I'd imagine attending a Borussia Dortmund game would be fantastic value for money. Atmosphere, concessions, ticketing geared towards making the average fan want to turn up rather than profiteering from those daft enough to turn up week in week out regardless.

Could easily happen, all it would take is Short to be bought out by some man city billionaire type- that could happen tomorrow for all we know.

Ask man city fans 10+ years ago about a 60,000 crowd with potential to go up to 70,000 + they would have laughed in your face.

So never say never.
Manchester has a population of 502,900 and they still don't sell out their 47,000 seater stadium most weeks now, and thats with a premier league title under their belt.[DOUBLEPOST=1383783637][/DOUBLEPOST]

First of all Dortmund are part of Ruhr, population within 100km = 25 million

We don't have that many fans.

If we get relegated we will lose another couple of thousand fans who will turncoat to the mags. From the Durham area, weak as f***ing piss them Durham lot.

their is plans already to extend the ground to 55 thousand and then eventually 70 thousand when the club are ready to do it, will happen in the next 10 years
Thought the most they planned it could to was 63000.

It gave people the choice to pick their games ... from then on never any danger of not getting in = lower crowds as supporters not committing to season tickets.
Conker with this 100%. If we'd have kept it smaller and been able to keep the demand we'd have been much better off.

Yep, that's my point exactly.

if we played attractive football, we'd fill it week in week out. THe support is there, they just cant tolerate poor football anymore.

It's already too big for the city imo.

Unless we can become a club who attract people with no connection to the city to our games, we'd be well served by a 42k stadium.[DOUBLEPOST=1383840570][/DOUBLEPOST]

I don't think it's that simple.

Our attendances have as much to do with economic factors as owt else.

What a load of shite. Most of the support nowadays comes from out of the City.

Outside of the north east?

Do you think a kid growing up in Hull, for instance, with no link to Sunderland whatsoever, will end up being a matchgoing supporter of our club?

I don't.

I think we're fishing in a fairly small pond, and our club also happens to be in the centre of one of the most economically deprived areas in the UK.

Our attendances are higher than any club like ours should have any dream of attracting.

That was if the World Cup came to England! No chance the club would do it of their own accord. 48k is about right, but in all honesty we could of just kept it at 42k

You said no connection to the City. The North East isn't a City.

This. It's not a working class game anymore, and this is predominantly a working class area. Ticket prices are just obscene, the game is screwed for the very people it used to attract.

So true. We pay stupid money so that those overrated fannies that masquerade as footballers can drive around in Ferraris and Overfinch Range Rovers. The games's fucked.
