The Stadium Of Light

Let's say, hypothetically, that we became successful over the next five years. Do we have the potential fanbase to extend the stadium to have two tiers right the way round? It would look absolutely class. And imagine rivalling Newcastle's 65000....

their is plans already to extend the ground to 55 thousand and then eventually 70 thousand when the club are ready to do it, will happen in the next 10 years

must be for the gigs then....and the leek shows.

At the minute, no.

If SBM or Reid had spent the money that should have been/was on offer in 01/02 on players rather than an unneeded extension then we may have been able to do so now.

We'd need a few spare jobs kicking about for a start. Last time we got them kind of crowds we had plenty of people in work as well as football not being as shite as it is now.

Not unless the team drastically improve. Concerts or not, the club haven't got a single reason to extend.

What's the point? We can't fill it as it is in the premier league. Bob Murray secured permission for expansion to 56,000 in 2002, but we went crap so it never got followed through but that permission still stands if we wanted it.

A strong reason for the decline has been economics. Another reason is unexciting and disappointing times from the club. We filled the SoL regularly throughout our first seasons in the prem there because of the novelty of that and having a new stadium, as well as our form. Likewise when we came back up with Roy Keane that same novelty spurred people up again. I remember how we were getting 25,000 when we were struggling with Quinny as manager but then when Keane's form stuck in it shot up to the 30,000's and then was hitting 40,000+ by the end of the season.

But that novelty has wore off, things were unexciting and now we're probably going to see attendances drop again in the championship. People get sick, discouraged disappointed, bored and fed up. The club has pushed a lot of fans away.

To spur up attendances again, we'd have to do outstanding in the premiership pretty consistently to win back the fan confidence. Then we could think about extending.

But it would be great to see the SoL bigger than Sid James's/The Wonga.
