The Ashes - Fifth Test, The Oval

Geoffrey Boycott, Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special
"I enjoyed Jimmy Anderson's bowling, he deserved a five-wicket haul, while Broad bowled superbly yesterday and his figures don't do him justice. Woakes got his one wicket - caught halfway down the motorway, wasn't it? - and Kerrigan wasn't bowled at all. What a good selection that was. Woakes and Kerrigan have combined figures of nearly 1-150. So you only had three bowlers, and that's why Australia have scored nearly 500. And when the opposition score 500, you're in trouble."[DOUBLEPOST=1377191448][/DOUBLEPOST]Meanwhile, Tremlett has 5

Bound to be seb but this barmy army ditty made me chuckle:
Agar doo doo doo
He got lucky on dayboo
Agar doo doo doo
Missed a century by two
He got stumped
When on six.
& his bowlings got no tricks
Agar doo doo dooo
go And fuck a kangaroo

Bang on the money, the only thing missing is his gran and a stick of rhubarb.

You have got to love Boycott. He is 100% correct. What a joke selection it was. It must be the only selection in history where they select one more bowler and end up with one less.

My mate has quite a few quid on England 4-0 and he is far from happy.

England have fucked up royally in this test with being more or less restricted to 3 bowlers. The coaches and selectors have treated the game with a large slice of contempt. Would they have made the same decisions if we had been going into the Oval at 1-1? Absolutely shocking.

I would have been mindful that we are playing them again in 3 short months and to give the Aussies any lift before then would be a huge mistake but unfortunately that is exactly what they have done.

Im delighted to be 3-0 up but in general we have not played p
articularly well and each game (bar Lords) could have gone either way.

That does however bode well for when we do switch on and give it a go.

Is it all a cunning plan to hustle the Aussies into believing batsmen like Watson and Smith are good enough and/or disguise our team selection for the winter?

Is the cupboard so bare with regards England's future talent (especially spin) that we can afford to sacrifice a 'dead rubber' Ashes test to gamble on players who may or may not 'step up to the mark'?

Did Cook and Flower come to the conclusion, based on weather forecast and pitch conditions, there was no prospect of a result?

A combination of all of these?

3-0 does not reflect the balance of the series at all. We could easily have come into the test 2-2.

Said before it started that it would be close England were not as good as they thought they were and Australia not as bad. Fortunately Australia have been worse than I thought they would be because England have as well.

Errrm Warne is now advocating setting a defensive field and hammering on a line off stump, and calling it 'attacking' cricket.

I thought is was 'defensive' when Cook did that?

Hypocritical Aussie twat.

The English defeatist mentality is just shocking. If you'd suggested dropping Warne and McGrath to an Aussie in 2006/07 for the final test, there'd have looked at you as if you were an idiot. Blatant disregard and disrespect of one of the greatest sports events in the world. The stupid old bastards at the ECB want to take a long, hard look at themselves. No wonder we'll never be number one test team for a prolonged period. What is it with this 'if the face fits' selection policy? Woakes is in purely because of Ashley Giles, not his talent or ability, which he has a complete lack of by the way. Kerrigan, what the fucks he done to warrant a place in the side? You've got Stokes taking wickets and scoring runs for fun recently, Onions and Tremlett taking wickets regularly not even getting considered, surely David Willey is more deserving of a place than Chris f***ing Woakes? Bairstow finally dropped after an awful series, when James Taylor is scoring century after century for the Lions and Notts.

Drivel

Bresnan was injured and needed replacing
Bairstow is hardly McGrath or Warne
Kerrigan is the top spinner in county cricket by stats. Frozen mind.
Onions is injured
Stokes averages sub 30 with the bat this season

Apart from that good post
