The Ashes - Fifth Test, The Oval

Who said they were mighty bowlers? They have included these players because they probably want to have a proper look at them when the series is in the bag.
Still doesn't mean they don't care about the result though.

Let them have 'a proper look at them' in tour matches or English lions. How f***ing embarrassing, treating an Ashes test as a practice match. They will look proper mugs if we over-bowl Broad, Swann and Anderson and get one of them injured.[DOUBLEPOST=1377117131][/DOUBLEPOST]
They don't know that they're good enough basically, so they're trying them out. In a series in which only one batsman on your side has an avg over 40, and in which your bowlers have been crucial for that reason, takes some real insight/faith to assume you can change half that attack with unproven players and still have a good chance of winning like

Bairstow -> James Taylor
Bresnan -> Tremlett/Finn

All of England except the selectors care about winning this test.[DOUBLEPOST=1377126871][/DOUBLEPOST]
Aussie's day but we're in it. Crucial 1st hour tomorrow.

I take it you are referring to the rain.

Kerrigan looks like a part timer.
I'm not sure Kerrigan is even a cricketer - his action is one of a man who has won a competition to bowl the first ball at an invitation match at the start of the season! All this rubbish that Cook spouted before the match about picking strongest team and then they select these 2 ringers.......

Kerry has been comfortably the best English spinner on the County circuit this year, if they were going to play two twirlers then he was the natural choice. Also, Woakes and Ben Stokes would be the replacements for Bresnan if he doesn't make the winter tour - and Woakes has out-performed Ben this year.

The two selections weren't that outrageous, and I certainly won't be writing them off after one day.

Kerrigan was brayed all round the park by Watson in the Lions match and showed similar lack of composure in his bowling. The decision to have 'another look' on a bigger stage is baffling to stay the least. Even if you accept an Ashes test match is the place to blood new cricketers the decision to try two cricketers who weren't even 'knocking on the door' is bizarre. Their confidence must be pretty shot by the experience.[DOUBLEPOST=1377160752][/DOUBLEPOST]

1. Monty is the second spinner.
2. The decision to play a second spinner is questionnable on an English wicket when we had occasional spin in the team[DOUBLEPOST=1377160835][/DOUBLEPOST]
the fact some Aussies failed and scored very slowly is a bit of a worry, they could skittle us out if they get their tails up

*but they won't

There was no sustained pressure on any of these batrsmen. All they had to do was see off Anderson and Broad and they were safe as houses.

I've just seen a Lancashire County Cricket Club brolly in the stands. Surely they are a best-seller in county cricket? On the same subject, would you believe they sold out of sun hats at the Durham Test?

Lots of love for Ian Bell this morning - is he now on his way to England greatness? He's now got 6,425 Test runs - more than players like Michael Vaughan (5,719), Nasser Hussain (5,764) and even Denis Compton (5,807).
[DOUBLEPOST=1377170734][/DOUBLEPOST]The Test Match Special debate has turned to the future of cricket. Michael Vaughan is worried that not enough children are being exposed to the game and former India batsman Rahul Dravid was particularly eloquent on the subject when he spoke at the ESPNcricinfo for Cricket event in London earlier this week.

"Test cricket, an older, larger entity is the trunk of a tree and the shorter game - be it T20 or ODIs - is its branches, its offshoots," Dravid said. "Now to be fair, it is the branches that carry the fruit, earn the benefits of the larger garden in which they stand and so catch the eye. The trunk, though, is the old, massive, larger thing which took a very long time to reach height and bulk. But it is actually a life source: chip away at the trunk or cut it down and the branches will fall off, the fruit will dry up."

Watto (or might have been Clarke...?) said he was over the moon when he found out Tremlett wasn't playing.

Maybe you haven't noticed, but Monty is being released by his County. Off-field disciplinary problems and being carted all over the Country all season, he's gone on loan to the 2nd division while his contract runs out. He's about as far from the Test side ATM as Phil Tufnell.

The decision to play two spinners is iffy, but once made then Kerrigan is the obvious choice. Simple as that.

Talk on the radio last night was that they wanted left arm and right arm spinners for this game. They will only expect to play 1 spinner in Australia so as that will be Swann, they'd be free to take Tredwell as they'll never need to alternate spinners in the same match.[DOUBLEPOST=1377176552][/DOUBLEPOST]

He's had some personal problems. Nice of you to write him off.

Didn't Pietersen do something similar with Hampshire/Surrey a couple of years back?

Alastair Cook and Andy Flower have said he still has an England future. After Kerrigan's debut, I am certain of it.

Where did I say that? :confused:[DOUBLEPOST=1377178778][/DOUBLEPOST]Nice of you to write Kerrigan off though but.

might not be too far fetched to say they could be out for 400 here if we can attack the stumps, once smith is gone its tail end
