Squad selected.

15 man squad. Includes Finn, Tremlett, Woakes and Kerrigan.

I don't think Woakes offers enough with the ball yet. Anyone seen much of Kerrigan? Stats are good like

Oh and I'm going on Wednesday

Woakes isn't good enough for international cricket.

Not seen kerrigan play much, but Old Traffords been a turning wicket this season wonder how he's fared at other grounds.

14 man squad innit?

I expect they'll line up:

Cook, Root, Trott, Pietersen, Bell, Bairstow, Prior, Broad, Swann, Anderson, Tremlett (Finn, Woakes, Kerrigan)

Not sure if they will look to rest Anderson or Broad (that may be the thinking in calling up Finn aswell as Woakes)

Bizzare that Stokes has been called up to the Lions & people are lauding him (despite a shit season with the bat in the 4day game) yet Woakes has been called up for this test...

Depends who is batting for you in the selectors meeting. Giles is a massive fan of Woakes (although when he was coach at Warwicks was very clever at keeping him out of lions squads during domestic season, always available for the tours though. Whittaker is the one who is pushing Stokes case, and has been for the past two years.

Woakes has been working with the test squad most of the Summer. He was at CLS for the last test.

Also told that he had to bat higher up the order at Warwicks at the start of the season, and has been batting at 6 ahead of Clark and Ambrose. Very good cricketer not sure he has the quality to match Stokes in the long term as an international all rounder.

Woakes must know someone. He really must. He can bat a bit, usually hitting out late on. But his bowling is just medium, slightly back of a length, canny on a seaming pitch , standard old fashioned English stock bowling. We never play on pitches now where he will take anything other than a battering for very few wickets. A truly baffling selection.

He's a tall bugger though so maybe that's it. They seem to pick them on height these days. If it is "for the experience" I'd far rather see Overton in among the side for a day or two, although of course he is only about five foot ten![DOUBLEPOST=1376851074][/DOUBLEPOST]

Of Course, Giles. I'd forgotten about him. There had to be someone as there are a lot of better bowlers than Woakes playing at the moment.

I'm another that doesn't think Woakes cuts it. Bresnan pace with more 4 balls -his bowling just hasn't kicked on, when he first came onto the scene he looked really promising. I like him as a lower order batsman, plenty of shots and a good head on his shoulders but his bowling just isn't international standard.

I have said many a time on here I really rate Stokes and in all honesty that number 6 position really is there for the taking.

for me, Stokes is a better bowler than Woakes now. Certainly wasn't until this season.

might be good to get Woakes in for the 5th test and fail, then take Stokes on tour as he can cover 6-7-8.

even more so on Australian pitches Stokes should be on the plane. Maybe even ahead of Onions, unless they want the closest backup to Anderson as possible.

Pleased for Kerry, not a prodigious turner but has good variation and has come on loads. Might be the worst batsman in 1st class cricket like.

Stokes is a much better bowler than Woakes and I'd even go as far as saying Bresnan too. Stokes' batting - as I keep going on about - has been shite, but for me you could even play him as the third seamer and bat at 7/8 in warm-up games.

Will there be a future for him with England? Flower tends to like his spinners to be able to bat a bit - especially when in England your spinner can be totally ineffective until Day 3 onwards......?! Plus Monty is seemingly the 'second spinner' or rather the 'sub-continent spinner' in the England ranks.

I think he's got a lot more about him than Monty did at his age and probably has more variations in speed and flight than Monty does now, and he can field. Plus he hasn't pissed on anyone recently....

Future with England? Never can tell with spinners really can you? Always going to be tough for a lefty finger spinner and if I had to put money on it I'd say he'll struggle to get up to Swann-like levels.[DOUBLEPOST=1377002162][/DOUBLEPOST]Bird and Khawaja out, Starc and Faulkner in.

Faulkner making his debut, looks shit.
