[the ashes] test 3. Manchester

Or batted longer, batted once and enforced the follow on, had they skittled us. There were some easy runs to be taken there, the fields were back and we were treading water.

Our first innings resistance was key. Pietersen's hundred has got us the draw in this test (assuming all goes as expected tomorrow).

aye thats another way of looking at it makes sense aswell seems to be damned if you do damned if you dont

They scored 527 at nearly 4 an over. Hindsight could also suggest they declared too soon.

Another couple of hours at 5 or 6 an over and they could have enforced the follow on and only had to bat once. Perhaps theyd be going into tomorrow needing just 7 wickets to win.

I think their declaration was pretty good. Kevin Pietersen batted very well for England and probably has done enough to save the game for England

The Aussies have batted well in this test.

What will let them down is their bowling - they had us in mega danger of not saving the follow on and blew it. Imagine if they'd skittled us and made us follow on this morning - we'd have had hours to bat today and could be sat here 5-6 down tonight. Instead, their bowlers weren't good enough to enforce the follow on.

Tough luck.

I don't get this mantra I hear on Sky all the time about "don't take the weather into account". I find this bizarre, a team looking at the big picture need to be working with the weather forecast in mind IMO.

For instance, if I were Clarke I'd have declared once the lead hit 300 today and got England in, especially as the Aussies need to win this test.
Definitely. I was expecting clarke to do that, having heard about his attacking declarations in the recent past.

totally agree.

Would still like to see a days play tomorrow though to decide it properly ;-)

Maybe it's a modern phenomenon, maybe not but teams these days seem petrified to set the opposition any less than 350-400 in the final innings.

History tells you teams find it in reality very, very difficult to chase anything upward of 250/275.

Teams need to find ways to do more with less, especially when they have to win a test and the weather is closing in (as is the case with Australia in Manchester).

I wouldn't - I'm at work so would only miss the damn thing. ;-)

Id honestly rather Australia have won this test than draw it as a result of rain. At least it would have kept the series alive.

Should England bat tomorrow and get the draw through dogged batting and determination then it is a satisfactory way of retaining the urn but not if it rains all day. Will be a complete anti-climax and will do Test cricket in this country no good whatsoever

 Another sniveling traitor who should be thrown in The Tower.

Balls to them, shithouse Aussie bastards.

It's weird, historical records in cricket are rarely ever broken but teams setting run chases always seem to feel the need to beat the previous total by a good fifty or so

I want either a whitewash or an entertaining series (makes life a lot easier trying to grow my club's junior section as well!). A days rain tomorrow kills any hope of either.

Anyone see Dickie Bird talking to a lesbo, Beefy started calling her a "he" then went ohhh urm, and reverted to HER

would have declared at 250 lead. Getting past the follow on ( assuming the weather hits tomorrow) has got us the draw. Cook, kp ,Bell and broad did the job

I agree. Clarke might get some stick for delaying it as they were aware that the weather was due and the longer the day went on the more chance of the rain coming.

300 lead tops and get England in.

I'm glad it rained here. Not just coz it saves us but there hasn't been much rain around this series and would like to see it now rather than it wait till the Durham test. It could still rain here of course but hope this gets it out of the way.

It can piss down all day for me. Means we hold on to the ashes and that is all matters.

This. I'm all for exciting cricket and test matches running all the way to a result even if that means we lose, but there are plenty of other opponents we can play for matches like that. Against Australia, all that matters is winning the Ashes, and anything that secures that end is absolutely fine.

The Oval test in 2005 had a bit of an anti climax when the bad light arrived just as Harmison was ready to knock Langer's head off, but the main thing that sticks in peoples' minds is that we won the Ashes.

Just back, somehow sunburt despite it being cloudy most of the day.

Looks like rain will spoil tomorrow, it tossed it down heavily for a good 3 hours tonight.

no way... not a chance.

in this series with the pitches that have been prepared so far if you win the toss you 'should' go on to win the game (or at least have a bigger say in how it transpires). so you can play as well as you like but if you lose the toss then you have to play much, much harder to win the game.

so imagine if the aussies do win this and then go on and win the toss next week they're in a great position to draw the series going into the last game.
