the worst possible way for us to retain the Ashes. No on field celebrations likely.

Makes the other two tests less interesting as Australia cant regain the Ashes and we cant complete a whitewash.

Would really like to have seen a days play tomorrow as I still think England would have had a sniff

Id honestly rather Australia have won this test than draw it as a result of rain. At least it would have kept the series alive.

Should England bat tomorrow and get the draw through dogged batting and determination then it is a satisfactory way of retaining the urn but not if it rains all day. Will be a complete anti-climax and will do Test cricket in this country no good whatsoever

Kind of know what you mean but what can anybody do? The series will be over tomorrow because Australia were so feckless at Lord's and beaten at Trent Bridge.

obviously no blame attached to anyone with regards to the abandonment of play. Its just a crap way of deciding a sporting contest. Its hard to feel any great satisfaction knowing we've retained the urn thanks to rain in Manchester

I get what ya saying but that's the way the cookie crumbles marra..England have failed to win games in the past due to the weather.......Cant help the British summer Im afraid

Plus us winning at Trent Bridge and hammering the Aussies at Lord's. Don't forget that.

Plus, until late this afternoon, there have been nearly 4 full days' play in Manchester and the Aussies (whilst playing well) are nowhere near forcing a result.

I think we can chase down a total but the rain wont allow the contest to continue. If the weather holds up, great, Ill be over the moon, especially if we bat through the day to chase the total down or survive the pressure. We will have retained the Ashes 100% on merit. If Australia bowl us out then the series remains alive and it will be great to watch for the rest of the summer.

If it does rain all day, I acknowledge that the first two tests are ultimately what have decided the series but as I say, I wont feel any genuine satisfaction if it is ultimately and definitively decided by weather

This probably slightly goes against what I said in my previous post but even if its 90 degrees baking hot sun all day the morra I don't think the Aussies will bowl us out and we wont have enough time to reach the total tbh....its too good a batting wicket for them to bowl us out ...got draw written all over it..Fair play to the convicts..they've been the better side this test match but ultimately they have to win the game and the smart money now says they wont..History will probably record that England retained the ashes at Old Trafford 2013....that'll dee for me

Or batted longer, batted once and enforced the follow on, had they skittled us. There were some easy runs to be taken there, the fields were back and we were treading water.

I don't get this mantra I hear on Sky all the time about "don't take the weather into account". I find this bizarre, a team looking at the big picture need to be working with the weather forecast in mind IMO.

For instance, if I were Clarke I'd have declared once the lead hit 300 today and got England in, especially as the Aussies need to win this test.

They scored 527 at nearly 4 an over. Hindsight could also suggest they declared too soon.

Another couple of hours at 5 or 6 an over and they could have enforced the follow on and only had to bat once. Perhaps theyd be going into tomorrow needing just 7 wickets to win.

I think their declaration was pretty good. Kevin Pietersen batted very well for England and probably has done enough to save the game for England
