Clubs with poor facilities paying players

Playing in the Durham League this year, particularly against ex-county league clubs, has been a real eye-opener. How on earth some of these clubs can be allowed to pay overseas pros without providing decent changing facilities or running water is beyond me. Surely it's time for the new league management committee to grow some balls and put a stop to this?

For my money, clubs should not be allowed to pay an overseas professional unless their facilities meet a basic standard.

An umpire was banging on to me about this at Littletown the other sunday. Had a right bee in his bonnet about Evenwood. Never been there so cant comment but he was badically saying same as you

Played at Evenwood on Saturday - no bar, no showers. Not sure they are paying anyone though to be fair - Billy Teesdale has been paid in the past I think but isn't Evenwood his home club? Assume he's playing there for free.

Esh Winning are the worst example I've seen. Horrible changing "hut" with mud on the floor and damp all over the walls, showers didn't work but they have a Pakistan "A" player (as well as at least one paid english pro). Half of the money they pay to the overseas pro for one year could sort the changing facilities out for the best part of a decade.

Don't think you will get many arguments on here regarding this. It has been a problem at a load of clubs for years and years. It wouldnt actually cost that much for these clubs to just gut their current facilities, get some new plaster up and a few seats in.

Agreed

However new changing rooms etc in in Ushaw Moor, Esh Winning, Evenwood would probably be burnt down after a year.

I know Billy isnt getting paid, and dont think anyone else is to be fair. Evenwood are constatly in a battle with the local council as its council land that the cricket and football pitches are on. Hopefully it will be resolved and maybe see an improvement in the facilities.

Agree with the OP. There were/are some shockers in the former County League. With the new NEPL clubs had to meet a ground grading criteria which I think as ensured teams visiting can atleast have access to running water!

Mind some of the places mentioned have been that way for years. I remember particularly that Kimmer wasn't very good either and they'll have spent a few bob on players over the last decade or so.

Anyone who thinks Evenwood are not paying players is living in cloud cuckoo land. The imports from boro spring to mind.

I am not defending it just making the point that clubs put all their funds into being competitive at the cost of shite facilities good money is going on very average cricketers

You're right. What should happen, is that all leagues should bring in a 'ground grading' standard where by clubs must meet certain criteria. They would then be punished based on the extent of their failings. From either points deductions to exclusions from competition.

This wouldn't happen overnight of course and maybe if such a ruling was to come in, you'd have to give clubs 2/3 years to get things done.

I think the paying players route that some clubs take is a more deep rooted issue to be honest. The genuinely successful clubs have the structure in place from Under 11s upwards and run coaching all year round. You see the clubs who do this well with 40-50 kids attending these sessions and as long as you have your 3rd/2nd XI teams set up to encourage development of kids rather than giving old boys a run out, you genuinely will see these progressing to the 1st XI.

Problem is there is a culture of wanting success immediately, and I suppose the pyramid system is only going to make this worse with clubs not wanting to risk relegation!

A good plan. As you know average players want money so its difficult to get a decent squad together ( look what happened to us few year ago when we couldn't pay players) so clubs make that the priority. I agree only meeting ground criteria will have an effect. Good youth set ups should be encouraged and supported,

How many teams, if any, don't pay anyone in the NEPL leagues? It's local cricket and should remain that way. I don't understand how someone can leave their home club where they played their junior cricket for the sake of a few quid. Some of the tripe getting paid is unreal.

None would be my guess

What are people's thoughts on the general support amongst clubs for such a rule change? A few of the ex-county league clubs would presumably resist (as they are the worst offenders); this but surely almost every other club would vote in favour?
