Will Smith - the allrounder

out spinning the 3 specialist spinners in this latest match, become a very effective opening bowler in t20.. who would ever have thought that would happen?

maybe it explains his pedestrian batting average, he is actually an allrounder?

He's also "faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound":-)

Pedestrian is kind. I'd have called it utter shit.

He bowled 3 overs for 9 runs yet other bowlers who were going for 9+ an over bowled their full allocation

little harsh, 35 or so isnt it?

by no means great but hes played some match winning knocks for us over the years and clearly has the ability to bat.. just one of those, hasn't quite got the knack of batting too far up the order IMO, would be better off in the middle in all honesty, would rather see someone like stokes pushed up the order really but im not sure he has the knack early on either. too many middle order players and not enough top. hopefully stoneman, jennings and borthwick/richardson can be teh top 3.. although all this batting seems to have affected scotty's bowling which is a shame*

* although having said that we suddenly have an embarrassment of riches in the spin department

Be interesting over the next couple of months as it appears the last contract is basically between him and Muchall. Muchall seems to be doing a decent job with the bat in the shorter form lately, but Smith has been preferred in the Championship and seems to be bowling a few overs here and there too.

I would go with Muchall personally but could easily go either way this one!

I'd go with Smith..... More strings to the bow and all that.

Will Smith is a strange one for me, mixed feelings really. Last season I personally thought he should never play for us again but he's definitely been an improvement this year, in all formats too admittedly. He clearly works very hard at his game and he's starting to win me over in all honesty. I'm not suggesting he'll get player of the year or 1000 runs, but he can stay in the side for me at the minute.

Plus, its not really his fault he's been put where he has in the batting order in T20's. I'd personally have him as low as 6/7/8 but thats another debate altogether.

Thing is, if he goes - its more than likely to have nowt to do with cricketing ability.

Given that both Breese and Thorp are hardly likely to be retained next year solely because of their age and Colly and Benks will be in the last year of their contracts and realistically ,it's questionable given injury and form they would be worthy of a place in the team, both Smith and Muchall need to be retained in what would be a very inexperienced and small squad. Muchall's 1day form and Smith's all-round ability-his bowling has on occasions broken stubborn partnerships-deserve renewed contracts. There is a limit to how much you can reduce the squad.

There's also the possibility that Muchall could be retained on a part time basis for one day cricket only, with Smith being kept on a full contract.

tbf he's done it before - did he not win was it young player or batsman of the year already, and break 1000 runs once, maybe even twice?

Perhaps. I'm not expecting him to do it this year though ;-)

Whats his averages across all formats this season like?

I think a few overs of spin in the hit & giggle and some decent fielding has kidded everyone into thinking he's doing the business with the bat when afaik, he isnt.

im not sure if anyone really thinks he is doing the business

as always its our top draw bowling that makes our fragile batting capable of actually winning games - a 26 for DCCC is like 126 for any other county 8-)

Whatever happens at the end of the season with regards to which out of contract players are released and who are retained [although at Durham over the past three years you don't have to be out of contract to get booted out] I would rather Durham retained Smith or Muchall than sign any similar journey men pros from other counties on a punt that they can improve at new county they rarely do.
I would prefer them to promote from within although it appears that there are no young batsmen who are any better than Smith or Muchall at the club. The young players who have made an impact this season are either bowlers or all rounders. In previous seasons what Buckley and Pringle have achieved this season who have probably been enough to be nailed on for a full contact.
If they are released and not replaced then our batting is going to look very thin next season especially if Benks and Colly continue to struggle with injuries.
