Channel 4 losing test cricket

Seems to do a lot of work overseas, possibly channel 9 in Australia so he might be happier spending all winter in Australia rather than touring with the Sky team. And I think I'd find him too hard to bear if he was on for a full half an hour instead of just a few minutes of highlights. Everything's too wonderful and romanticised when he's blathering on.

He is Channel 9's main presenter during the Aussie summer. Quite a coup for an Englishman TBF.

Nowt's on 'free' telly. It's just the way it is. Now you have to rely on dodgy streams for almost everything. No wonder people aren't interested in some sports or sporting events.

Sky do a great job, as much as it pains me to say it. One thing I've noticed too is that there doesn't seem to be that many adverts. I may be totally wrong on this but it doesn't seem to me like there are that many.

Certainly not in relation to their football coverage when they cram two ad breaks in at half time. Mind when pundits of the knowledge of Jamie Redknapp are on I don't so much mind watching f***ing adverts

All home Test matches should be shown on free to air television imo. It should be protected like wimbledon, Fa cup final etc. I am privileged to be able to afford sky. But there will be a lot missing out on the test matches because they can't afford sky and have to make do with a hour highlights and TMS.

It gives the kids extra time to be out actually playing cricket than sitting on their arses eating crisps watching Sky. ;-)

It was the right thing to do in the long run IMO. Channel 4 did a lot for cricket but neither them nor the BBC would be able to compete with Sky's coverage now. They simply couldn't provide the experts and the extensive technology that Sky do nowadays.

Channel 4 were the ones who brought Snicko and Hawkeye into the game, arguably the biggest change in 200 years.

I thought it was a bit of a kick in the balls when they were dumped for Murdoch. It was clear they were used as a stop-gap to stop an outcry of The Ashes going straight from the BBC to Sky.

Very true!

They were a pretty long stop gap in that case. They started in 2000 (after the NZ series defeat debacle the summer before when English cricket was at a very low ebb) when we beat the West Indies and continued until 2005.

I think so as well, I'm still surprised Mark Nicholas has been nabbed by Sky, I think he's excellent.

Mark Nicholas is crap! Channel 5 and the convicts are welcome to him, he spoils any cricket commentary he does and it's a great shame they chose the coverage that he was presenting for the DVDs of our last 3 Ashes wins and will no doubt do so again despite the vastly superior coverage and commentary of Sky.

Utter bollocks IMO. But even if true no one is watching it now.

Mark Nicholas is literally the worst commentator in the history of cricket. I have an irrational hatred of the bloke and his obsession for saying the word ''hello'' when an attacking shot is played.

Some of us are.

Plus, as it's on SS2 (or Ashes HD as it's called) this summer I assume that BT and Virgin customers can both get it. Now, I imagine a fair proportion of the population have one of Sky, BT or Virgin.

Add that to the money Sky have pumped into the game through the TV deal (which BBC or C4 could not).

Plus, Sky televise the county game a lot more than either BBC or C4 did so they actually make cricket more accessible for lots of us.

It's not perfect but it's a good balance IMO and England certainly aren't suffering ATM. If we are in 15-20 years with no kids coming through, we can maybe blame Sky then.

It's a known fact that Sky suffer vast downgrades in the Summer so far less customers will have access to Sky Sports between the months of May and August than though - therefore cricket is missing out on a lot of casual fans between those months.

I watch and obviously a large amount of others do too.

C4 or BBC wouldn't/couldn't invest as much money and time into cricket (county cricket as well as internationals) as Sky do.

I do believe that Sky could come to a comprimise with a terrestial channel to air some of their highlights with the right to use their commentary/features though.

I imagine a lot of older people who have watched cricket over the years, can't get to watch the cricket now. Only way of doing it is to pay £45 per month.

In particular the ashes. How damaging has that been to the sport? When flintoff, Vaughan and the boys won the ashes there was national celebration but now a lot of casual fans dont even know its on let alone everyone else.

Bang on.

Sporting events of national significance should be live on free to air channels, simple as.

Murdoch would buy up air and sell it back to us, if he thought he could get away with it.

Following the cricket was a big part of my summer but now just TMS and the highlights, it's obvious some enthusiasm will be lost.
