Mavrias

The article fails to mention Mavrias' recent serious illness and injury and suggests that Giaccherini's arrival means that the left wing position is now adequately covered. According to transfermarkt.co.uk, Mavrias plays on the right wing.

Journalist's logic - Mavrias has not signed yet; it has been a long time since this was first mentioned; SAFC have signed a winger; ergo SAFC have ended their interest. Very poor - must try harder.

That actually looks like what has happened, they've taken a punt because it's not been finalised yet. Despite his illness, injury and his medical being delayed by both sides until he recovered and then Sunderland wanting a few days extra delay because of him needing to be seen by the new club doctor.

So you're still expecting him to sign then?

According to the Greek press everything is done barring the last stage of his medical, where he needs to be seen by our club doctor, he's agreed personal terms on a 4 year contract, had his MRI and had his medical documents handed over to Sunderland ahead of the medical.

While he North East press reckon it's off 'just because'.

Really don't want to scaremonger but I wonder if our wage bill is a bit of a short term issue. This report combined with the N'Diaye deal could well be an indication that our failure to shift on highly paid, unwanted players is hampering us at this moment. Also worth noting that our squad is actually pretty bloated. Perhaps the club are erring on the side of caution with both these issues. The last thing we want is to be caught on the wrong side of the line on wages or numbers.

Do hope your reading is right, mind. Would hate to see talent slip through our fingers because of David Vaughan and the like.

That is clearly going to be an issue at some point. We can't keep carrying massive wages on players that aren't wanted and bringing new players in.
