DCCC Finances

Perhaps more of note is the laying off of certain members of the playing staff. A few senior players have been told their contracts won't be extended after this season in an obvious bid to get the wage bill and club finances in order.

Good that we're seemingly clearing out some of the deadwood, BUT also seems there's some talent being let loose who could have done a decent job for us in time :-?

Any ideas on who? Obviously it's the end for Harmison and Claydon but who else?

Started off the season with 19 full time pros which where supplemented with 4 academy players on development contracts.
Harmison as good as gone and Claydon will probably be playing for another county next season.
If they are in the last year of their contracts i can't see Breese getting a renewal as his body seems to be giving up on him. Braithwaite appears to be miles away from the first team with a lot of younger seamers ahead of him. The finances may also mean that they don't risk giving Thorp another contract, although that would be very tough on him.
Muchall appears to be a one day cricketer these days although quite effective and Smith is playing in all forms of the game with the occasional contribution, but if they leave who will replace them no point signing more journeyman county pros from other counties.
Richardson may feel its time to move on, even when he is playing well he does not appear to get a fair crack of the whip. He is probably never going to get the nod over Mustard to keep wicket.
Then you have Stokes and Borthwick who are yet to sign contracts for next season. I don't know the date during the season when other counties can officially talk to other counties players in the last year of their contracts but there will be quite a queue for those two.

Fair assessment

Bit worried by Stokes and Borthwick not signing

Would be disaster

Makes you think they want away, especially with Stoneman and wood signing deals

Anyone heard out

Think the issue for Borthwick is that does he get enough bowling on Riverside pitches. Also this season you would have to say does Collingwood trust him to bowl in tight situations. He appears to prefer finger spinners who keep it tight. Even away from the Riverside he is being used as a second innings back up spinner.

I'd have thought Scott would be more than happy at being given the No3 batting spot and showing such good form. As ayoungster he was more a batter who could bowl -he now justifies his selection on batting alone and needs only to be called on to bowl when conditions are in his favour. Scott's a Mackem through and through-I'd be very surprised if he left.

It's guessable - the lads who won't be kept on. Perhaps quite alarming though is that more than one of them played today. I heard five names mentioned (from a member of the playing staff). Stokes and/or Borthwick weren't mentioned.

I imagine Collingwood's on a lot of money and his figures don't look great this season. Valuable experience but how long can you pick and pay someone for that alone?

Good that the young lads are playing so well this season as it looks like they'll get plenty of chances going forward. How long's Mustard got on his contract? How old is he?

Colly and Benks both got a year left but i would have thought that would be their swansong.

It's very worrying times. Perhaps the club should stop f***ing about with weddings, wank gigs and Peppa Pig. Instead they should concentrate on cricket. Just a thought of course.

Anyone see the report on Look North tonight.

A loss of nearly £2m.

I think more worrying was the talk of this year's internationals only "reducing the losses". That's a real worry given that it's not every year there'll be an Ashes test and T20 v Australia, can't imagine there'll be any seasons that we generate more revenue than this year.

Wow in terms of county cricket that is another massive annual loss.
Interesting reading Benks column in the Echo today. Says he is going to hospital today to have his op, and then will concentrate on getting back to fitness for next season which he states will be his last.
I might have it wrong but reading between the lines he appeared to be suggesting it will be his last at Durham. I don't know if what has happened with the reshuffle of the coaching staff since Cooks injury which has effectivley frozen him out, when he said he was keen to coach the t20 campaign and have his op later.
Could this be more cost cutting by the club. I thought he was nailed on to be the next coach.
