Left out of England ashes warm up match against Essex, Joe Root to open the batting with Cook. Looks like Compton has had his chance.

Would keep Root in the middle and give Compton another chance personally but it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that they've dropped him.

Probably harsh to drop him this early but I think they have selected the correct and best team. You would end up with Root and Bell at 5 and 6 if you pick Compton and for all that's still a very strong middle order, it's a waste of both of them, Bairstow is more suited to a number 6 role and Root is a proven county opener who has taken to international cricket like a duck to water.

On a side note, Michael Vaughan fawning over Tremlett's performance at Headingley in the champhionship match, match figures of 2/137 from 40 overs? :-?

Maybe he wasn't 'dropped'.

Lets not got ahead of ourselves. The management said weeks ago - before the Durham match - that they wanted Compton to find some form for his county and Somerset have elevated him to opener (perhaps on England's say so). This Wednesday Sometset face Australia - if that isn't a good place to stake a claim then I don't know what is.

Add to that, he could potentially be on the field at 6pm on Saturday and England v Essex begins on Sunday - it may well be that the selectors want him to bat against the Aussies over batting against Division Two bowlers at Essex.

Ah didn't know Somerset played the Aussies, big chance for him then.

He is gone. I think it's the wrong decision, sets Root up to fail. And if he does it becomes a big issue. Who opens?

I agree pushing Root to quick, doing a great job in the middle order. One thing it does do is it gives a slight opening to Stokes for no 6 slot if Bairstow continues to struggle. By picking Stokes for the twenty/20 series it shows they are desperate to get him back into the England set up. The England selector who has a season ticket for the Riverside will be backing him.

Good, absolutely the correct decision.

He's a County player who was struggling for his place at Middlesex and wouldn't be anywhere near the Test side if it wasn't for Taunton. Root is 10 times the player he'll ever be.

Does it? How long would you wait before you let an opening batsman open the batting?

On the face of it, with KP coming back in, they had to choose between Compton and Bairstow for the last batting position. They obvioulsy think that Bairstow is a better prospect, and with Root's ability to open they can bring KP back and retain Bairstow without messing about too much with the batting order.

Team for first test (IMHO)

Cook (c)
Root
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Bairstow
Prior (wk)
Broad
Swann
Anderson
Finn

With Compton, Bopara/Morgan, Onions, Treadwell and Bresnan as backup. Looks a decent squad

i'd still be getting out the crowbar and looking for a way to get some bowling ability into the top 6 but can't see it happening anytime soon

Root has been an opener all his life, makes sense for me.

I like Root, think he is going to be a cracking player for England.

I have nothing against Compton but to be honest I think it was a bit of a mistake to ever call him up as the replacement for Strauss. Given he is the same age as Cook I dont know how long term it was going to work.

I'd love to see Root and Cook, develop in the same way as Cook and Strauss developed.

Will be very interesting to see what England do if Compton scores a century in Australia warm up.

They've messed Bairstow around

He was in great touch for Yorkshire but he's just been carrying drinks for the first half of the season, what benefit is that to a developing player? Same happened in the winter.

He will desperately need time in the middle now like

Arguably our best ODI/20/20 keeper batsman and a solid no.6 test match batsman, I think he should be playing all forms.

(Buttler's one innings wonder against NZ was exactly that it seems)
