I really really detest the rule that they can come back from international duty, and effectively join a game as a fully participating 12th man.

Prime example today, Dernbach has lined up for Surrey on the second day of their game against Warwickshire, and has already picked up 2 wickets this morning.

Where is the fairness in that? Pick what's available and stick with it, good or bad.

Really shite rule IMO.

I can understand that logic, but it's simply unfair on the counties and takes credibility away from the competition IMO.

Counties became mere England feeder clubs years ago. Money dictates.

I'm fine with that, and I'm fine with central contracts and counties being dictated to as and when players can play for them. But joining in the middle of a match? the line has to be drawn somewhere.

Aye, I agree with you there. It damages the integrity and fabric of the sport IMO, turning it into an overly England driven farce.

I remember a few years ago Notts did this with Sidebottom, but they he replaced a batsman who had already scored runs as they batted first. So they had an extra bowler and extra batsman in the first innings.

Think it lasted less than a year, was a rank idea, I remember one ODI where we introduced Vikram Solanki as our 12th player, woop.

The county game is designed to produce the best possible England side. Who can remember who won the county championship in 2005 (think it was Sussex at a guess) but everyone remembers the 2005 Ashes. The 12th man idea is nominated before the start of play and counties will sometimes be on both the good end and bad end of the rule.

If it helps England and bearing in mind someone like Onions could be 12th man for England and miss up to 3 or 4 county games without this rule then its a good idea in my book. It isnt like the rule can be manimpulated mid match as the player name who drops out and comes in known before the start of a county game.

It also boosts the standard of the county game

I agree that the county game's main intention should be to produce a strong England team, but I feel it is unfair on the clubs and the public, that a counties best player can walk into the 2nd day of a game and effect it's outcome.

I haven't looked, but my money's on either Warwickshire or Notts, both of whom were relegated shortly afterwards if I recall, as were Sussex.

I have looked now and it was Notts in 2005 after Warks in 2004.
