England XI in your lifetime

Best English keeper/bat ever imho. His keeping in the latter years, for a bloke approaching 40, was top class.

Averaged 39 batting anywhere from 1-7 against the very best bowlers in cricket history (not like the shite these days, i could average 40 against some of the modern day bowling attacks).

Similar era as the OP, i'll go with;

Tresco
Gooch
Vaughan*
Thorpe
KP
Stewart +
Botham
Flintoff
Gough
Anderson
Tuffnell

Tufnell for Swann?! Croft, Salisbury, Watkinson, Illingworth etc all forced Tufnell out at times.

Very surprised at the amount of mentions Caddick has on here.

Best quick in the Country for about 5 years up to 2000ish, better than Gough in that team and Harmison/Hoggard from the 2005 team.

200odd wickets at under 30, including big performances in big games. Says it all.

Tufnell was streets ahead of them & often got a raw deal by management. Also his average iirc isnt too different to Swanns (although i stand to be corrected) in a day & age where the standard of test cricket was streets ahead.

Plus I know Tuffnell was a mad bastard but at least he isnt a quirky plastic mag bellend.

I startes watching at the start of the 2005 Ashes

Trescothick
Cook
Vaughan
Pietersen
Collingwood
Flintoff
Prior
Swann
Anderson
Harmison
Jones

So it's basically a combination of the 2005 team and the current team.
I'm 20 and started in 04 properly so would probably say similar to this only thorpe instead of colly

He was a crap keeper IMO decent batter.

Just a shame read and foster couldn't recreate county batting at international level.

Ambrose was a shit keeper but so was Prior!
In all seriousness Prior has to be in.

Foster is a cracking keeper and a decent batsman but the biggest one for me is Chris Read.

Its down to your mag obsession again isn't it

I'm 25, first memories probably of the SA/NZ home summer of 1994.

Trescothick
Strauss
Cook
Vaughan
Pietersen
Prior
Flintoff
Swann
Gough
Anderson
Harmison

Batting line-up probably looks a bit odd with Cook at 3 and KP at 5, but I had to find room for Strauss as he's a personal favourite and usually scored runs when it mattered.

Bowling attack has everything too

Always thought you were late 40s

Are we talking Test matches?

Bouycott
Gooch
Stewart
Thorpe
Pietersen
Botham
Flintoff
Knott wk
Underwood
Snow
Old

I'm 39, so from about 1980 onwards.......

Gooch
Cook
Pieterson
Gower
Thorpe
Stewart
Botham
Swann
Anderson
Gough
Caddick

Same'ish age here at 38 and I'd find it hard to argue with your team although I loved watching Robin Smith bat as well so might have him instead of Gower

I'm 26 and the first series when I paid attention to who was who was the 1997 Ashes.

Strauss
Cook
Stewart
Pietersen
Thorpe
Flintoff
Prior
Swann
Gough
Anderson
Jones

I'd also be having Butcher, Trescothick, Vaughan, Colly, Harmison, Caddick and Croft in or around the squad the rest of the time.

Cook
Gooch
Gower
Pietersen
Thorpe
Botham
Stewart
Swann
Gough
Willis
Anderson
