Just come back up and I'm assuming that they wont be back out. Very interesting day and a few observations:
1. 250 is clearly a good score on this wicket
2. with 18 wickets having fallen today then the wicket is clearly deteriorating
3. suggests that tomorrow, unless the weather is about to change dramatically, then Somerset will find 210 a challenge to chase down and a lot relies on Trescothick.
Cant see Durham adding many tomorrow morning.
No one has made a 50 yet in the match so its quite hard to judge the batsmen as clearly a bowlers wicket has been prepared. However question marks remain over a couple of players.
Can Rocky rise to the challenge and push on for those big scores?
Can Will Smith find some form?
If they cant what does Cook do - bring in Richardson or go for Rudolph even for just 3 months?
Benkenstein is obviously coming towards the end of his playing career, I think he's 38 or 39 this year and we assume we know where he is destined for ie a change of role at DCCC.

Will Smith has bluffed a career as a professional sportsman by averaging 32 as a top order batsman.
I know Colly hasnt scored in this game but he made a great international career batting 4/5 for England, can we REALLY not find a place for him at 3, 4 or 5?
Even after Blackwell retired its a huge shame we couldnt find a few quid for a half decent middle order overseas batsman (didnt have to be a 1,600 run a season superstar :roll:, just one of the cheaper asian or Windie lads?)

Smith admitted when he lost the captaincy that it took him a while to get his appetite back for the game. I think, a bit like Plunkett (and others) it would do him good to move on and play elsewhere.
I heard at the ground today that Blackwell apparently umpired in a few NEPL games last season. Is that right? Most people know about his ambitions on that front so it didnt really surprise me but what games did he umpire in?

Interesting what you say. Colly had a fantastic time with England, but if you look at his stats with Durham they are not much better than Smiths. He has only scored 12 championship hundreds for Durham and his average is about the same. Smith has always batted in the top 3 Colly has normally been tucked away at no 5 or no 6.
Iam not just looking to have a pop at our captain but i think a lot of people remember what he did for England which as i have said was fantastic and forget that his stats with Durham are ordinary.

It'll have to be because the last 2 wickets will likely fall within about 15 minutes of the start tomorrow. Could be carnage in the first session.

IIRC he was shite with the bat in the season he was captain too. I think the season before be became captain, when he scored ~1000 runs in the LVCC is the only time he's seemed to be a decent first class cricketer.
I always think that his ultra conservativeness (never seems to have a strike rate over 30) is part of his downfall. Especially in games where the wicket is full of demons.
As for this game, a quickfire 30 in the morning from Mustard (maybe I'm asking too much) might just put it beyond them. The Bristol bloke did say he thought we had enough now, but the beauty

Having said that, it was the wicket that was misbehaving and you'd have to feel that will only get worse as the game wears on. With the talent they've got in their batting I can't see them batting as badly again as they did in the first innings.
Was anyone down at the ground who could say just how hard batting was? I felt it was crying out for someone like Stokes or Mustard to just come in and have a slog - might not have been pretty or conventional but if someone came in and started hitting a few boundaries their heads might have dropped.

The wicket isn't as bad as the scores make it out to be, some very good bowling and what's looks to be early season rustiness, plus a little bit swing seems to have inflicted the damage.
The rules on the roller have changed again, any weight roller is allowed.
I hope we have enough runs now without having to rely on 30 or 40 more today. Once again, the first hours play will be crucial, early wkts for us puts them under pressure but if they get someone set then 210-220 won't look so far away.
