LVCC D1 - Durham v Somerset

Lower order failures.
Smith getting fuckall.
Mid-Lower order getting stuck in and showing the top order how to do it.

Have we gone back in time to last season?! :shock:

Seriously though, on the face of it - 250 after being put in isn't a disaster. I'd say both teams will be quite content. Pretty much stalemate for me. We'll only really know once they've batted.

Decent enough day. Cloud tomorrow, sun on Friday ... Heres hoping.
 
I was down for most of the day, bar an hour or so spell just before lunch (when the wickets fell!). It started out as a very tricky day weather wise but we made a good start. It sounds like some lax shots played a part in our downfall, particularly, I'm told, Smith, who nicely guided it to slip.

Stokes got out playing a cut shot, from Dockerall's 4rth ball and we were in trouble at that stage. Great fightback though late on and TBH given the time of the year, traditionally a low scoring period, then I would have taken 250 before the start of play.

Most of the team got in...and then proceeded to get out. :-?

The weather got out nice in the afternoon but the forecast for tomorrow isnt so good and Somerset may have to scrap for any sort of lead.

Back down tomorrow.

Surprisingly the wicket isnt green at all. Its pretty hard TBH and looks like a bit of a dust bowl.

The outfield is slow though, not much value for your shots, still a bit brown but will have dried out a bit from the sun today.

Whats very surprising is that for this time of the year there seems to be quite a bit in it for the spinners. We also saw that against the University when Scotty bowled well.
 
Stokes really can't play spin he needs to desperately work on it if he is to improve. 250 is not a bad score early season but somersets greatest strength is batting

Someone was predicting that last week ;-)

A few spots of rain might suit us tomorrow as I think bigger scores can be made here

I had a look at the wicket close up for the University game and spoke with the groundstaff. They said it was a bit damp but it honestly looked champion to me. really dry and very light in colour.

The outfield was a browny green at the weekend but is starting to get greener as it dries out.

It was quite encouraging being able to get 250 on it I thought. I said to one of my mates today that if Mustard had been captain we would have been all out for about 150. I think Colly instills a bit more fight in them.

Clearly Trescothick is the key. If they can get him out cheap, big if like, then the rest may take badly to that but they have a good lineup and I'd expect them to perhaps get a slight lead on us.

Famous last words but I'll predict that they'll get somewhere in the 250 to 300 bracket.

Clearly Trescothick is the key. If they can get him out cheap, big if like, then the rest may take badly to that but they have a good lineup and I'd expect them to perhaps get a slight lead on us.

Two things I'd say about that:

1. If you remember one of the key to us winning matches last season with Colly was that he played a containing game. Very few games with him in charge were very high scoring. It was all about bowling line and length, keeping it tight and putting pressure on batsmen, however
2. The main strike attack of Thorp, Onions and Rushworth are all similar types of bowlers and if one doesnt come off them none of them might come off.

If its cloudy tomorrow and it warms up a touch them the 3 of them will hopefully get some swing. There are always a clump of wickets early doors at Durham.

I'd say they can maintain a better line than the cider plodders

Hopefully we're batting in the sun on Friday and rack up a target

I think our lot are going to have to work hard to take wickets today, the first hour is going to be crucial.
There wasn't much movement through the air yesterday and only mimimal seam movement, our seamers need to keep it tight and try and force the Somerset batsmen into errors, I can see this being a tight game which could go either way.

Its a positive sign, in that its a tight game, too many last year were far too one sided, there also needs to be a realisation that the strength in our batting is from 4-8, so although we might not get blistering starts, we have battled hard.

Put in to bat in April in a traditionally bowler friendly arena against a side who havent finished outside the top 4 in the last few years and to make 250 is progress. Our two best batsman have contributed nicks and that will not continue.

I am feeling positive
