Durham CCC v Durham Uni

Been down with the bairn to his U11 County stuff for most of the day and whilst I was there the first team were training. Spent some time watching them practice, had a bit craic on. A few points of note:

Harmison - was there, bowled, seemed fine and up for it.
Collingwood - bandages off, batted and fielded, seemed ok; he'll probably have a bit of a reaction tomorrow I would imagine but from what I'm told his operation has been a big success.
Stokes - bowling fast as fuck. Really quick.
Coughlin - the club has had really good reports from the club he was playing with in Australia over the winter. Batted and bowled really well.
Rushworth - had a chat with him, good lad. Enjoyed the MCC game and said that Warwickshire look like the team to beat. Reckons that Bell and Trott will be playing for them when we face them

All the players looked to be in pretty good shape.

The BBC are tipping us to be in the bottom 3 so we go into this match and the new season next week with a much lower expectation than recent times.

More importantly........... is austins open again?

Might have a pop down if it's not Baltic. I wonder how much practise they have done out doors never the same game in the indoor nets, if they have done plenty they could hit the ground running as the teams going to Barbados etc are getting no real advantage playing in batting friendly wickets in warm conditions.

Nah. Says on the door that it isnt open again until 10 April ie the somerset game so God knows whats going to be open at the weekend as regards bait and ale. :-?

Been at the Meet The Players night tonight. Good craic. Sat on the same table as Harrison and Wood. Usual stuff TBH. Fairly low key and its obviously a big test for the young lads who will be featuring. Looks like Rocky and Jennings will be opening. Indication that Richardson might bat at number 3. Unlikely too see Harmison playing until it warms up a bit. Undecided what that means. 8-)

Doesnt sound like they have done much. Big play made tonight of hitting the ground running unlike last year where the first 5 games just passed us by. Theyve all been training hard though. Not an ounce of fat on any of them.

Think we'll be lower mid table.

I'll be happy to see Jennings and Richardson in the team on a more regular basis.

Hopefully Harmison gets nowhere near the team. He's made his intentions clear by organising a benefit night in London, the night before Durham have a home game.

Mark Wood is a very good cricketer and has been playing in Australia during the winter. Hope he gets a chance more.

Will see you Saturday

Bbc tipping us for the drop? We're the form team of he division!

If the young lads come off then it could be a really good season. Didnt really realise until tonight just how many younguns we have vying for a first team place. Very talented lads which is a good write up for the DCCC Academy.

I was confident we wouldn't go down last year, even at the half way stage of the season, and I'm confident we won't go down again this season. The squad we have is a talented set of cricketers who could compete with any team in the division if they get it right. Home form is going to be the key, and our lads have something to prove this season, to themselves and to the supporters, if we do well at the Riverside then we'll be ok.

Did they put any bait on for you tonight?

Do Harrison or Wood think they will be in the first team at the start of the season?

No bait laid on. TBH the two lads didnt say a lot. Nice enough lads but wouldnt be drawn on very much. Sensible TBH.

Neither Collingwood or Harmison will be playing in this game.

It will be interesting to see which batsmen comes into replace Colly. With the size of the squad there does not look like to many options. If Jennings and Richardson are already in the team to bat in the top three. Could this mean Muchall returns bats at 6, top scores and gets back in the side for the start of the championship.

Will Smith or Muchall to play then?
Not sure. The club seem to have their heart set on Rocky and Jennings opening with Richardson at number 3.

I guess we'll see.

Muchall looks like our one day specialist and to be fair to the lad he's done well in the CB40. He just doesnt do it for me consistently in the CC.

See above re Muchall.

Be interesting too see how they shuffle the batting order to cater for Colly's injury but my guess would be that the team for this game will be the team for Somerset - with of course Colly coming in next Wednesday.

I'm sure though we are going too see far more of Harrison and Wood who so far havent really put a foot wrong.

Be interesting too see what they do with Borthwick early doors. Not really leg spin conditions/weather.

It's the same side that finished last season except for Colly, Mutchy takes his place. Here's hoping the weather stays dry for all days.

Stoneman
Jennings
Richardson
Benks
Stokes
Muchall
Mustard
Borthwick
Thorp
Onions
Rushworth

Must say I too am looking forward to seeing what Jennings and Richardson can bring to the fore. I kind of agree with the BBC that we might struggle but that's by no means an admission that we are a poor side. I see us as a side in transition and I'm delighted that the youngsters are getting a chance because we have some immense talent coming through.

I'd see a 5th place finish as a huge success, so with that in mind I think (hope) I'll be a little more patient if lads aren't scoring runs or aren't taking wickets. I reckon we've got rid of some deadwood over the winter and except for Harmison I think everyone left in our squad can offer something. I'm even willing to give Muchall another chance if he comes in at 6 and can score a few useful 50's when the chips are down

Oh and the weather over the last few days even seems to have perked up :-). Granted its still been cold but the sun and blue sky combination seems to be coming at just about the right time 8-)
