Ground Preperation for the new season

With all of the rain over the last year and the lack of any sunshine or warm weather to dry things out, how are clubs getting on with getting grounds ready for the new season?

I can see a lot of pre season friendlies being called off because groundsman, will not release the gound early. Never know it be this wet at this stage of the year.

I was talking to a local groundsman on Friday about preparations for the up coming season and he wasn't optimistic. The problem seems to be that the grass hasn't started growing like it should be now because there's no heat getting into the ground, and with the forecast not being any warmer for a week or so it's going to be a struggle to provide decent strips early on, and with it being so wet there's a limit to the work that can be done on the outfields.

I had a look at Chester Le Streets outfield last week and it's in a right mess due to the relaying that took place over the winter. It's heartbreaking to see any cricket field in that state so close to the new season, I only hope it gets sorted quickly as the season goes on and they don't end up playing the majority of their games away.

On a brighter note conditions might be ripe for Durham seamers

If only we could bat

I understandthat they are looking at using Maiden Castle for the full season.

They have also talked about using The Racecourse but I dont think that anything has been sorted yet.

However the junior teams have been told that all of their fixtures will be away from Ropery Lane in 2013.

They've said that they are hopeful that home matches will be played by the first team but at the minute I really dont see how.

The pitch has to be reseeded again at the end of the season so they will go through this all again. How much the club will lose in bar takings is anyone's guess but it could leave them in difficulty. They do have some Ashes events planned to co-incide with their 125th anniversary so it provides them with a bit of a cushion.

Shame when these things happen.

I remember Willington had a prolem the other year when they tried to redo the out field and we had a very dry winter and they ended up with a worse outfield for the next year and had to repeat the seedingthe year after. Mind you they could still play there games as the square was not effected,

the only good thing is roll roll roll the square flat it works and gets the real bumps out ..
thats what ive asked for at silky this season roll it n roll it while its wetter than wet ..

I'm now being told today that CLS CC has approached Brandon about using their ground for some matches.

Thats down by the scoreboard which is one of the worst affected areas. their only option there is to returf it.

Just been down to our ground for the first time this year, and somehow with this weather it's in the best shape it's been in for a long time!

Not been a lot of rain since January in fact... Just about average for the time of year

Still the ground is holding much of what came before

A nice dry week reasonably warm week would sort most of these problems out.

I never thought I would get excited about a lawn mower but today I did. groundsman have so many toys can't wait to have the weather to use them all
