Who remembers this? 20 years ago, the Sunderland fans showed their respect for this great player against West Ham at a sombre Roker Park, you literally could have heard a pin drop. Similar scenes were repeated up and down the country - with one notable exception.

Only thing I heard was the clicking of the turnstiles.

Yes, that's how I remember it. You normally get at least one pissed up moron letting his mouth go, but there wasn't a peep from anyone - impeccable.

Remember it well.

Also remember a minutes silence in the late 80s/early 90s, no idea what for, but again deathly silence and only the clicking of the turnstiles could be heard. Until someone, who presumably hadnt been to the match for a few years could be heard entering the Fulwell saying "F*cking how much"? I did chuckle like.

Gathered that but is there more to the story ?

They were at Tranmere, live on local telly as well I think. Chanting, although they reckon it was those outside waiting to get in and not knowing that there was a minutes silence. Daily Star backpage was a photo of them chanting with the headline "SCUM".

Which is what happened..was very well repsected inside the ground but there was some singng outside the ground...anyone whos has been to Prenton Park knows it's not very big...Star's headline was out of order.

IIRC Sunderlnad fans got stick for something similar a few years ago...again undeserved.

Down Cardiff for John Charles? I was there and some of our idiots were chanting

Aye - think that was it - remember reading at the time...it only takes one or two knackers - then people tell them to shush and that makes it sound worse...didn't realise there was chanting.

In general, most football fans are respectful when it comes to stuff like this...and put rivalries aside.

There probably was a lot of shouting from both sides that made it sound worse. As the minutes silence was starting one of our lads shouted there's only one Lee Trundle then it just escalated from there

Did'nt like, I watched it, and the abiding memory I have is the whole mag section Jumping up and down and singing non-stop. They were on the verge of promotion that season.

what a load of shite - I was there.....you're right about the promotion and there was a big away following (and why there was lots of people still outside at kick off time)....

The Headlines in the papers the next day and the TV pictures were obviously fabricated then?
