I've booked day 5 tickets for the Ashes test at Durham, but simply refuse to pay £80 (equivalant to 2 years membership at Durham for me) plus £3 booking fee.

Aren't they selling them on a "no play no refund" basis?

Taking a risk, but I've done the same.
 
Do you not reckon they will stop you watching somehow from the health club with it being such a big game? Sure they closed it for a game a few years back so they could flog tickets on that balcony.

No. I think they blocked the windows when we played Australia a few years back. The balcony bit is available for every test, odi or t20. Any member of the gym can apply but if its over subscribed (always is) they have a ballot.
