I have an Uncle, Ray Lugg from Jarra, who had a decent carrier in England before moving to America in the 70s.

A couple of weeks ago, one of Frank Worthingtons brothers wrote in ot the Gazette to try to find him as they were good old pals.

Heres the letter

FOOTBALLERS occupy such a scintillating place in the public consciousness these days that it’s hard to imagine one fading entirely from view.

Or at least that’s the impression imparted about Ray Lugg.

The Jarrow-born midfielder made more than 370 league appearances over a career covering three decades in this country.

But does anyone know where he is now? An old fellow player of his would love to know.

The inquiry comes in the first instance from reader Lance Liddle.

Says Lance: “Ray Lugg was a Jarrow Central School pupil who progressed to a career in professional football.

“He played for Middlesbrough, Watford, Plymouth Argyle, Crewe Alexandra and Bury in the years from 1966 to 1980.

“He later coached in Fort Lauderdale in Florida but nothing has been heard of him since.

“Bob Worthington, who played alongside him at Middlesbrough, is keen to contact Ray and would appreciate it if anyone can update details of his current whereabouts.”

I can’t tell you a great deal more about Ray, other than that he was born in July 1948 so would be around 64 now.

He played for Middlesbrough between 1966 and 1969 and, at what seems to have been the other end of his career in this country, for Bury between 1979 and 1980.

If anyone has contact details for Ray, let me know and I’ll put you in touch with Lance.

-------

My cousin got in touch to pass on his contact details. As my Uncle has lived in Florida for a while, as he coached over there and in the 70s played for Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

--------

I AM no soccer buff but I imagine that playing opposite the legendary Pele must be a career highlight.

So look who’s centre shot here as, in the foreground, the fabled Brazilian displays his famous footwork.

The player is Jarrow-born Ray Lugg, who had a successful career here as a midfielder in the 1960s and 1970s, playing for Watford, Plymouth Argyle and Crewe Alexandra, among other sides.

You may remember that a former team-mate from Middlesbrough FC, with whom he played between 1966 and 1969, was looking for Ray, who was last heard of coaching in Fort Lauderdale in Florida, in the US.

I’ve since been delighted to hear from Ray’s family that he is still in Florida. His contact details have been passed on to his old pal.

They also kindly let me see this picture of Ray, in the strip of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, with Pele, who played for the New York Cosmos, in the foreground.

Also interesting to see was a programme from March 1972, when Ray was part of a Watford side that played Sunderland – this was in the days of Ian Porterfield, Bobby Kerr etc – at Roker Park.

Here he is playing against Pele in the MLS

My dad played at the Olympic Stadium in berlin for the Army v the germans in 1949.

He was also offered a chance to play for Portsmouth when he left the army, but didnt want to go doon south, so stayed in the north east.

He always told me he was a shit hot centre forward and of course I thought he was full of shit, however all his old mates confirmed this at his funeral.

I played at Roker Park in the late 80s at HT against another school aged 13. Halycon days never to be repeated :) The pitch was like a bowling green.

My father played centre half for the lads in 1958/59 - played about a half dozen games. Some bloke called Hurley kept him out the side.

My Grandfather played for England Ametuer team in the 1920s and won the FA Ametuer Cup in 1923 with London Caledonians.

I inherited none of his ability and therefore only played for the Sunderland London Branch.

My Grandad played a couple of reserve games fpr Wolves in the 1940s. He got offered a short term deal, but with a young family to support, he had to turn it down as he earned more and had better job security as a brick layer. SHows how the game has changed.

I once had a kickabout with Bernie Slaven, Dave Bennett & Gary Gillespie on in a Teesside car park.

Played for safc youth team while doing my gcse's as a 15 year old before being released, moved on and got 2 year yts and 1 year pro before being bombed again in 1998. I'm now 31 and wish I'd done things differently.

My sister went to school with Len Shackletons grand daughter. Does that count?

In one season won the league, the Echo Cup, the Bishops Cup, the other County cup (cant remember the name), a national 5 a side and 6 a side tournament and also dicked both Liverpool and Nottingham boys. I was 10 years old and it ended up being the highlight of my career!

You must have played for St Cuthbert's in Grindon.! They won the Bishops Cup 9 times?

Playing 3 20 min matches against aston villa boys when i was about 10,
Drew 1-1, 0-0 and won 1-0 thanks to a goal from myself.

The mrs. Uncle used to play for Arsenal as a goalkeeper, in the 50's

I lived next door to Kevin Ball during the first 4 or so years of his Sunderland career

Brother was signed for Southampton at 16 and played for them up until Strachan came in. Highest level he made was the reserves. He grew up playing in the same youth team as Brian Howard and Scott McDonald, the former has been in my house. He's still good mates with them, he went to McDonald's wedding not too long back and regularly keeps in touch with him.

When serving in the RN our ships team played Hadjuk Split's youth team back in the late eighties, in their main stadium. We won 2 - 0, fuck knows how cos the were a shit load better than us.......it was awsome though, proper stadium, dressing rooms the lot - got shown round and fed and watered......good hosts.
Oh yeah and played in the same school team as Stan Cummings
