Both Mark Turner and Chris Rushworth played junior, 2nd eleven and 1st team cricket for Sunderland, a decent achievement for their coaches.

Rushy played majority of junior cricket at Hylton, Turner started at Ryhope so they have to be taking a lot of credit. Ryhope also produced graeme bridge too

Reason noone mentioned them is cos they are stuck up wankers and always have been. CLS and sunderland do have good youth cricket amongst others, but neither gets many of their youths into 1st team - prefer to import from elsewhere

Youldon, Robson were both youth players at Sunderland . Problem is the second team is a rich mans play thing so unless the young uns are getting bumped into the firsts by the county they just get bits and pieces and get sick . Good club to play for though , free subs, free kit , good facilities , nice wicket

Really irritates me when clubs do this. IMO second team cricket should be used primarily to produce first team cricketers and should therefore contain players on the way up where possible. Too many clubs have 6 or 7 players in their second team who either can't or won't play for the First Team and upon losing a couple of players for some reason, the first team end up struggling to find players to play.

Third team cricket is where the older players still wanting a game should be playing.

Sunderland have 11 regulars in the 2's . Very social set up . They would never play 3's the standard is way too low.

They use 3's to socialise county juniors to the long game accompanied by a few throw backs :-)

None of the subs or kit is free :-?

It's true that there is a problem in getting the youngsters through because of the large number of senior players on the books. The majority of the 2nd XI are players who came through the juniors who haven't kicked on and are now aged 25-32.

Still, in 2011 six of the first XI had played junior cricket for the club, including Rushworth who was there from the age of 12.

I see your point and dont have a problem with the lads who didnt quite make the 1st team grade playing, I just think the 2s should be the place where the youngsters become accustomed to the longer game. As you say the standard of 3s is low and the kids get into some awful bad habits at that level.

The best clubs for kids in my opinion will have a stable captain, a couple of decent batsmen, a couple of steady bowlers, and 5 or 6 up and coming juniors to play around them.
