Only 21, so plenty of time ahead of him to develop and he already looks fantastic. Also means that we aren't having to disrupt Trott.

Only problem is, throwing an untried 21 year old in an Indian tour when we all know what the media are like in this country. A couple of bad innings and they will make sure every single shot he plays is highlighted and destroy the lad

Cook must have been around that age when he made his debut and he got a ton in Nagpur IIRC.

We're slowly evolving and changing our team, it's inevitable, no-one goes on forever. If Root is good enough get him in and if he has a sticky start, stick with him. We need some long term planning and foresight, even if it causes some trauma in the short term.

Very true about Cook, but getting off the mark with a century relieves a hell of a lot of pressure on him.

We've seen over the summer with Bairstow that a couple of iffy innings early on and question marks are quickly raised by certain people, often unfairly.

I'd go with Root, but only if he is given time should India not go well.

I'd bring Eoin Morgan back in for India. Excellent player of spin and seems to have really knuckled down and improved his game. He's even ditched the IPL in order to get his test place back, which seems to have benefitted him. If KP isn't going to come back, we need someone who can come in, bat aggressively on the flat tracks and take the game away.

He's even ditched the IPL in order to get his test place back, which seems to have benefitted him. He may have done all of that (and credit to him, particularly the IPL bit) but he's still not scoring runs in championship games. Plus it would mean shuffling the order about, there's enough issues with bedding in Taylor, Bairstow and a.n.other without shuffling Bell or Trott about.

Maybe but you have to look beyond that sometimes. Trescothick was averaging early 20s in first class when he was selected for England and Vaughan similar. Morgan does play spin well, is strong mentally and wont have quick pitches to exploit his weakness against the short ball. Good selection for India.

Aye, agree with that. If the selectors think Root's good enough, he needs a decent chance to prove it and that should amount to more a tough tour of India.

Anyway, farewell to Strauss, a gentleman and fantastic ambassador for English cricket, a good batsman and I'll always remember that one handed catch in the 2005 Ashes, what a belter that was. :-D

You wouldn't really need to shuffle the order about as Trott would stay at 3 and Bell at 5 (or 4 if KP is recalled) with Morgan slotting in at 6.

Having said that I think I would probably stick with Bairstow but the arguements for recalling Morgan are valid ones.

I think my top 6 would be Cook, Root, Trott, KP, Bell, Bairstow with Taylor and Morgan in reserve.

And finally, belated thanks to Strauss for being a superb captain, top class batsman and a decent bloke. Good luck to him in the future unless he stands for the Tories of course.
