After hearing talk about a possible strike yesterday I've just received a message from our secretary confirming that all Durham Coast League Umpires are going on strike tomorrow.

Still don't know what's happening with tomorrows fixtures. Unsure if we will umpire ourselves, find Umpires from other leagues or the games will be postponed.

From what I gather they're not happy with the league exec regarding disciplinary matters.

Unfortunately over the past few years the local game has become littered with bell ends who think its ok to question umpiring decisions!

Standing at 1st slip a lot I cringe when someone is absolutely dead leg before and he starts twisting about the decision.

Just got this from Martin Emmerson.

Umpires think a disciplinary hearing into the antics of one player was not severe enough and are boycotting games.

I dont know which player.

had it confirmed that we deff have no umpires tomorrow.

murton and easington have ganged up together and fucked the umpires off.

we have to umpire our own games tomorrow in both 1st and 2nd div.

the league is a joke now. we should have backed the umpires and suspended the lad in question straight away.

the umpires do a cracking job.

me dars a 2nd div umpire in the coast league. Will have to find out the crack from him then.

No lbws this weekend in the coast league then!!

Bet they want even more expenses

Greedy gets

The recreational umpire is paid less, including exes, than the minimum wage for a 7/8 hour stint out in the middle. With all the responsibilities of managing each game ,qualifications etc and the occasional abuse the clubs get a good deal from the umpires most of whom are giving back to the game what they out of it as players.
They need the support of the leagues for disciplinary matters but that does not mean that their reports should not be subject of scrutiny. The prime responsibility for discipline is the teams skipper, then the club and the league must ensure the 'punishment' meets the code of conduct issued by the ECB.
It must be a poor relationship between the umpires association and the league if they feel strike action is necessary.

usually umpires just say "missing leg"

So what's happened then?? Don't have to mention any names. I don't want to call anyone either but perhaps feel the need to play devils advocate - are the umpires in question totally blameless too? The reason I ask is that I feel certain umpires this season have made an example of certain clubs who won't be playing in their respective leagues next year. That's been noted by a few people at a few different clubs on each side of the fence too.

I can deffo concur with that.

I am an Umpire as well as a player and it happens every week I stand.

Certain clubs have been robbed because of grudges held by umpires you mean
