Let's hope it stays that way. Pretty tough decision whether to play Taylor or 5 bowlers though.

Personally I'd go with Taylor and Finn for Bopara and Bresnan.

Yeah, it says he dropped out just before the squad was announced, positive and negative because he could have had the entire series to prove once and for all if he was good enough at test level. Now unless someone makes the number 6 position their own, Ravi isn't going to get talked about again.

Bairstow, Stokes aren't ready yet
Morgan and Buttler are not test match players

Compton, Hales are the next in line i'd imagine

Has the talent.

I don't understand why they 'change their game' from ODI's to Tests. Morgan frequently hits 50+ off 30 balls in ODI's, so why not try it in Tests? If you're a naturally attacking and inventive player, it's pointless trying to block and play a typical 'test' innings. Just f***ing whack it if that's what you're used to.

He has to deal with the fact that 50 isn't deemed enough. They can put three slips and a gullu and bowl back of a length on or around off stump. Different game

Has the talent.

When has he ever demonstrated he has the talent (to step up to international level) in first class cricket?

He's almost 27 and has only made 9 first class hundreds, two of which were against the UAE for Ireland.

His three career County Championship tons have come against the mighty attacks of Leics, Northants and Gloucestershire!

You would think if he had the potential to play "his way" in test matches he would be bullying the county trundlers in division 2 with great consistency and ease.

Harsh but fair.

This is a piss take post, right? :-?

He's played a fair few match winning games for England in ODI's and have a look at Vaughan and Collingwood's stats - they're 4/5 runs higher in tests cricket than their first calss records.

Not saying he should play (I agree he needs to show some strong form in 1st class cricket, didn't take his chance in the test team) but he's obviously a talented player and I think he's proved he's got the ability to play at the top level, he just needs to pull it all together (mentally).

What I was saying was, when we picked Morgan, why criticise him for playing poorly when it clearly went completely against his style of play? If you're going to pick him, don't expect him to play a typical 'test' innings of 50+ off 200+ balls. If you want that, pick a more defensively sound player.

Staggering.

Since when has a Test innings been 50+ off 200+ balls?

I expect any bat that makes the Test team to be able to adapt to conditions and build an innings. I expect them to step it up when the goings good and dig in when it isn't, and bat for time if need be.

Test cricket and one-day cricket are pretty much two different games, and it doesn't look like Morgan has the technique to make a Test player, but has enough about him to carve out a good shits and giggles career.

Anyhow, looking forward to seeing how Taylor does, I think he's got it.

Seems to me like this is the end in Tests for Ravi. He could have played the next 2 Tests and got 2 hundreds and consolidated his place as a Test match number 6. Much like Ramprakash, he has the talent but not the mentality to adapt to Test cricket and the pressures and criticisim that it brings.

Don't think Taylor will play.

I'd go with that team as well, it's a risk to go with 5 bowlers, but it's a risk we've got to take because we can't be happy to settle for a draw. It may lose us the game, but it might also be the key to stopping SA building a massive innings like they did at the Oval knowing we can bring on Finn to send down some bullets on what will hopefully be a bowler friendly track.

thats what they should play, what i would play but i dont think we will see a return to 5 bowlers. despite our [bowling] unit failing against SA we also needed every last run so i doubt it would have made that big a difference
