Sorry if SEB but surely the ground staff at the Oval need to be questioned about preparing this nothing pitch. Yes South Africa have batted well, but without two nothing shots from Pietersen and Bopara and two played ons England might well still be batting. Fair enough if they're scoring at over 4 an over. It's a poor advert for test match cricket.

South Africa will win this Test IMO and therefore the groundsmen will have produced a result pitch. Englands batsmen havent cashed in and made it a safe and secure game

I disagree, even if South Africa win. You can't have pitches that only work on day 1 and day 5. That's if it does anything tomorrow. It's about time they stopped rolling the bloody things again.

This. The problem is that it's become solely a batsman's game in recent years, partly due to one day and T20 cricket becoming a battle of the batsmen with bowlers only there to provide the opportunities for batsmen to score.

It really doesn't help when you've got people like Chris Broad reporting teams for 'substandard' pitches that actually offer a fair contest between bat and ball. No doubt he'll see SA 490/2 and think what a great success for test cricket that the batsmen are able to fill their boots and the bowlers aren't having any effect on the game.

Our bowlers have looked a bit poor as well. Whats up with the speed gun? bops is as quick as Bresnan, Broad and Anderson. The SA bowlers seem about 5-10 mph quicker.

Is he the one who reports pitches when 15+ wickets fall in a day and not when both teams rack up 700-2?
