Anyone else feel they've got about ten squillion average lenses for 3 or 4 different applications.
To fulfill my interests I 'need':
A decent quality, general purpose/walkabout lens (about 18-80 range)
A 150mm+ apo lens for long exposure astrophotography and wildlife
A wide fast lens for star trails, aurora and landscapes
I am currently covering this with:
Samyang 8mm fisheye
Samyang 14mm rectilinear
Zenitar 16mm/f2.8
Tokina 11-16mm/f2.8
Leica Summicron-R 50mm/f2.0
Leica Telyt-R 180mm/f3.4mm apo
Sigma 18-200mm/f3.5-6.3
MTO 11CA mirror lens 1000mm/f10
(Cameras are EOS30D for daytime use and modified 20D for astronomy).
I would much rather have a small number of quality lenses and not have to take such a heavy camera bag on my hols. Any suggestions how I might go about it?
My initial thoughts were:
Canon EF-S 17-55
Sigma 150-500
Tokina 11-16
Although the Tok mangles stars so I would have to hold onto one of the Samyangs for that alone...
Bloody lenses - Just got a Canon EF 100mm 2.8 macro, will be using it for water droplets soon. £280 from talkphotography forum. Had to sell my siggy 10-20 to pay for it tho.

Just as well. Some on here hit 30 posts an hourMost of my stuff comes from the classifieds forums on there. Good prices and most have been well looked after, hardly any dodgy deals. Need to be a member for a month or so and make over 30 posts for access, stops people diving in selling shit and buggering off.

Have to say, I've had a lot less grief buying second hand than new. Obviously the risk is higher as there is no warranty, but at least the fuckers have been tested on a camera and any duds filtered out under warranty.
Where did you get your new Sigma from smoker? sounds like a nightmare..
Amazon fortunately, so shouldn't have too much fuss getting my money back. I would have preferred an exchange but there was only 1 left in stock and the lower the stock the more chance of getting a dud in my experience.
Think I might just buy a used 17-55 off ebay or MPB. IN an ideal world I'd buy in a camera shop and try it on the 30D before buying, but I aint made of money.

Do you expect issues with the 30D with modern lens like smoker?
BTW, if you don't mind grey www.procamerashop.co.uk are class. They have refunded about £1200 in drunken mistakes and not even mentioned it, utterly class service. Bought my body and 5 lens from them all spot on.
I'm expecting a delivery from them tomorrow
