LVCC D1 - Durham v Lancashire

What on earth was Mustard thinking about bringing him back?
Its the question that everyone was asking as they streamed out of the members lounge. Absolutely unbelievable captaincy by Mustard and unbelievably shocking bowling by Harmison - who is, as if we didnt already know, absolutely and utterly finished.

A sickening defeat.

i guess if we dont play him he may just retire a bit early, wouldbe a fair lump of wages rid.

although if i was him i would just play 2nds cricket for £400k per year or whatever he is on
£3k per week has been quoted by a few people. The bloke is finished. there is no doubt about it and Durham now have to come to some sort of deal for him.

There now has to be a deal struck with Harmison because I doubt that many of the members would give the bloke the time of day.

He has bled the club dry since 2009 and you now have to ask some serious questions about why this old guard are now being given contract after contract.

I wouldnt renew MDV, Thorp, Muchall etc. contract and as the old guards come up for renewal I would release them. The old guard are stifling the club and a 3 year plan has to be put in place for a total revamp of the side, which unfortunately will probably include relegation.

I think a lot of the blame lies at the door of the management who after the lucrative deal they signed with Emerites have well and truely took their eye off the county championship. It is not that long agao we could, and should have been county champions for 3 years on the trot, a feat that had not ben done for donkeys years.

I agree with all of that. Leach has to ask himself some serious questions here because the Board have made a right fuckup of this.

Agree with Colonel entirely until the Muchall contract - that man has no use in CC for us.

you do agree with him then, as he said do not renew. i would renew diva, although iirc he has already renewed and there is no chance he will play on after it anyway.

time we start seeing more of richardson, wood, raine etc etc

Aye, soz Colonel, read it wrang. However I'd keep Diva for another year like.

when you are in a situation like this something has to change. If nothing changes within the team or management structure then quite simply we will be in the same place after the next game.

I was told at the ground today that mustard offered to resign the captaincy but that no one else was willing to do it. Its hearsay but it seems that we have a problem about people wanting to be captain. after the smith scenario Mustard took it as a last resort which perhaps implies that people are frightened to do it for some reason.

there is no doubt in my mind that there is a huge problem behind the scenes. im not sure for example what the relationship is between cook and the more senior players.

Worrying times for sure. I look at the current side however and no player really stands out as being worthy of captain.....

Diva and Benkenstein are perhaps too old, in a sense you'd maybe want someone to do it for a while. The same would probably be said for Colly, although he'd be clued up enough to do it. Stokes could be a player who is massive for us for years to come, but then if he realises his potential he'll be away with England.

Then looking at the other batsmen there isn't really anyone who can be expected to hold down a place in the side! We don't really have any regulars! I'd maybe make a case for getting someone in, especially with a view to being a skipper - overseas or homegrown doesn't matter. Trouble is, the money clearly isn't there for the Championship. That Emirates deal, while great financially, could prove to be one of the worst decisions in the history of our club as a first class cricket playing county.

He's a waste of space, wish he'd just fuck off. Nobody wants him at the club
agreed. He's finished. I'm uncertain why people continue to consider him some vital member of the team. Frankly he seems to me to be a liability and bad for team morale.

I'm yet to hear a good word about him. Last season he was injured with a bad back, yet he's on ITV news hosting his own charity golf day. How can you be fit to swing the golf clubs yet not fit to play for Durham?? Organising golf events and commentating for Sky, yet can't be arsed to show his face during games.

Just looked at the CB40 squad for tomorrow and it amazes me that Raine/Wood/Richardson/Jennings are again not included. Just what do these promising young lads have to do to get a game, and what's the matter with Brathwaite? Fail to see what Plunkett has done to get his name in the squad

It's all a shambles at the moment. Need rid of the likes of Muchall/Harmison. His comments when his brother was released were a disgrace, should have been chased for them alone. He isn't interested in Durham.

I'd keep MDV though.

Our bowling over rate was - after the game, and I'm told we ended this game on -1 points.

We have 28 points from 7 games, Worcester have 42 and Surrey have 53. It will take a miracle to keep us up.

At the minute there is no bright horizon but I'm sure that some good will come of the situation. Of critical importance is that the Board take decisive action and sort this mess out.

If they dont then the second half of the season will be the same as the first and relegation will be a formality.

Its a real shame but this is where we are.

the Harmison situation has been handled appallingly by the club.

In fairness, was that not down to the conditions? Although strange he wasn't given a bowl at all
Especially as the over rate for Durham was -5. We've lost 4 points because of this and came out of the Lancashire game with 1 point less than we started with.

Why wasn't Borthwick bowled to improve the over rate? If it didn't turn then we could have gone back to two quicks

i dont believe that story about nobody wanting to captain the side, i would have thought colly would jump at the chance

whilst i agree i would much rather see richardson in, tbhf to muchall he has been in decent touch in the pro 40, jennings apparently cannot play till next year due to contractual reasons [?].

also plunkett has bowled very well in a few pro4o matches already taking 4-20 and 4-33 iirc or there abouts. plus his batting makes him a very useful one day player.

would much rather see wood batting at 7 ahead of smith mind, but that is the problem with a brittle line up, you wouldnt have pictured us putting on 180 for the first wicket so an anchor for the innings is a decent safe option, albeit one i wouldnt have picked

I'm now told that colly hasnt been offered the captaincy of the side. I think after the Warwickshire game and the mid season CC break that he will and we'll see him in charge for the second half of the season.

Certainly something has to change or the second half will be pretty much like the first.

Take a look at our CB40 fortunes to our CC fortunes. Two things stick out - different captain and Harmison not playing CB40.

durham dont have the money to pay Harmison off and he wont want to go just yet anyway as he has a benefit next year which I'm informed will probably mainly take place in London with the help of his mates flintoff, Vaughan etc. Its reckoned that he could make half a million pounds.

Fair play to the team yesterday on an outstanding win. Smith is very good in the field but it does seem odd having him at number 7. Delighted with our CB40 form at the moment.

Plunkett got smacked all over vs Scotland, 1 wicket for 61 runs. He got 2 wickets yesterday for 50 runs. 4/33 vs Somerset
