Strauss's captaincy

Was coming in for fearful criticism yesterday by the likes of Willis, Cork and others for being too defensive particularly when they were 155/3. I thought then and more so now that they were talking bollocks. Day 1 the wicket was as good as its going to be and once a player was in the policy of run containment was bang on and if we had been more attacking the chances are they would have scored more quickly and got a total that would be too big in the best conditions of the match. It was the same this morning - reduced them to a crawl and picked up the wickets when they came along.

All the pundits now seem really happy with 275 but theres little reference to the fearful criticism Strauss was getting yesterday. Having said that the pitch is already geting more difficult and its going to be a real test of patience for our batsmen. A test they have failed time and again this winter.

I think he got his tactics pretty well right yesterday, perhaps gave Patel a few too many overs, but other than that, about right. We just need him now to forget about captaincy and get a much needed big score, the pitch still looks good enough to be matching them or even getting a small first innings lead.

I dont think anyone can dispute that he is sometimes more cautious than he needs to be. You often find we get 2 or 3 quick wickets (and have a lead)and then when a partnership is still in its infancy (lets say 20 or 30 runs) he is quick to go more defensive a take out slips.

Saying that, he gets results (so far) so I find some of the criticism way over board.

decent read

Cheers for that - cracking article by a bloke that really does know his stuff. Chappell was one of the most agressive and positive captains of a generation and i'm sure defensive fields dont sit comfortable with him. Personally I dont think Strauss has done much wrong and his captaincy was good in this match.
