Jonathan Trott

His strike rate isn't ideal but he does the one thing no other England batsman does in ODI's - score runs.

Bell and Bopara both have inferior strike rates and don't score half the runs so I'd say Trott is the least of our batting worries at the moment. Kieswetter is looking like an inconsistent flash harry, Bell and Bopara continue to flatter to decieve and Pietersen still can't buy a decent score in ODI's. Trott's role in the team wouldn't be questioned if the players picked to play around him were performing, the problem is they aren't.

Trott puts pressure on others to score right from the off then press on, he doesn't seem to recognise when he really needs to step the rate up to help the team and his partner

But surely his role in the team is the play in the way he does or something similar, as other more powerful or fluent players such as Kieswetter, Pietersen or Bopara accelerate around him?

Trott's only downfall is his inability to step up the gears himself when either this isn't happening, or when he's running out of partners.

people do accelerate around him Patel for example the other day but still that wasn't good enough, its also very hard not to feel pressure when he is at the other end playing out dots, for instance the other day he scored 1 off 2overs he faced each ball the next over his partner (can't remember who) tried to smash the ball out the park.
I don't believe he can't step up the gears any pro cricketer should be able to hit a fuckin boundary or two he just doesn't take the risks as he is more interested in his average than the team. People can say that is bollocks but watch Trott and on the very odd occasions he does chance his arm he normally reaps the benefits.

ODI batsmen who make 100's these days nearly always have strike rates of 100+ he doesn't do that. Trott isn't far away from being a decent ODI player but he has said himself he doesn't feel he should be playing any differently so until he does start playing more attackingly he should be dropped.

You may be right on the last point, only he knows. He is capable of hitting boundaries but I don't know if he gets too wrapped up in his own batting or the instructions given to him by management - if there's one thing you can say about the England set-up it's that it can be very mechnical in it's plans.

I just feel it's a bit harsh on Trott when most of the time he is doing the job set out to him, when others aren't even coming close. There's every danger we could take Trott out of the team and barely reach 200 on a regular basis because it seems no-one else can score consistently in that format at the moment.

Morgan coming back will make a huge difference to the batting I understand what your saying about what the others are doing around him but there where players on this tour who should even have been there. IMO I want us to go with a group of young lads who can develop alongside the experinced guys we have. We may lose alot of games to begin with but we need to develop a team over four years.

I agree and if that means the likes of Bell, Bopara, possibly Cook and Pietersen fall by the wayside then so be it. Morgan is the key for me as he can accelerate from the off which no other batsman we have can do. Someone like Trott should be fine in the side if we have more Morgan's and less Bell's for example. The likes of Hales, Buttler, Bairstow, Stokes all have that aggressive nature that players like Cook and Bell don't have, it's just whether they have the temperments to go with it. James Taylor is very similar to Bell but has very quick hands so can go through the gears quicker aswell IMO.

As you say, time is the key. Mustard and Davies are good examples of young players who have come in, done reasonably well and then binned unceremoniously binned for no apparent reason while Bell and Bopara get chance after chance.

In.

The problem isn't Trott, it's that other batsmen aren't scoring runs heavily enough at the other end.

Player X has a SR of 72 and avg of 45

Trott has a SR of 78 and avg of 51

Which player am I talking about and why are wanting to drop a guy who has the best record of any english batsman.

Madness

what if trotts slow slow scoring rate puts the opposing batsmen under such pressure theyre having to do it all and gttting out cheaply as a result. considering our line up has cook, trott and bell in it thats an awful lot of overs in a match that are going to go for 3 or 4. middle/lower order batsmen cant get a decent score and a quick pace every match its just not how it works

correct 17 ODI hundreds to his name and the saffers are always there or there abouts at the top of the rankings

yet Trott has better stats

Yeah great post eb - it is potty talking about dropping Trott. Theres plenty not right about Englands ODI team and Trott is one of the few things that is right about it.

You mean the same player that is lambasted for being selfish and was actually dropped from the team for being slow. Also when has SA been close to winning any tournament in odi cricket in the last 10years? Also over the same period of time that they have both played Kalis has better stats and and more importantly has a better strike rate

speaking selfishly trott is hideously boring to watch.

i dont think anyone would argue with him numbers, it is just that having him along with cook and bell and bopara is obviously a mistake. you can onlyreally carry one or at most two players who score slowly.
