Firstly, why is it that a keeper has to open? Just because Gilchrist (a player who would be talked about for a place in an all time XI) did, it doesn't mean we have to

Secondly, what did Davies do wrong? He is a proper batsman imo, has opened in the Championship.

Prior did shite opening. But surely he is a decent 6 or 7

Kieswetter - well the lad has a cracking in to out over extra cover, and a decent thwack over cow corner. But so does Luke Wright and he is shite. And he cant keep wicket
 

Davies all the way for me, didn't deserve to be dropped, and is far better technically than Kieswetter. Much more scoring shots and has a good temperment.

I wouldn't touch Prior again personally, he batted almost everywhere in the top 7 in ODI's and couldn't cut it.

Kieswetter is a decent enough keeper-batsman for his age but lacks consistency as he's technically very questionable still, not enough scoring areas that don't involve trying to hoik it as hard and far as he can. When he does get a start his technical issues usually mean he does not convert.

Give Davies the extended run he's deserved for a while and have Bairstow/Buttler as learning back-up.

I'm not sure on Prior. He is clearly a batsman and he scores quickly enough. Given his keeping has improved does he not bring balance?

Not for me as he doesn't bring runs. Around 60 ODI's and an average of something like 23?. It's shocking and for all we know he is better, he's had too much time to prove it. We all know Ian Bell is better than his ODI stats but many would have him out of the team tomorrow (me included) without any grumbles and not see him back no matter what.
 
Prior batted at 6 in the world cup on four occassions and did nothing he have also batted 5-8 in the list a number of other times and done nothing. He is not an ODI player 68matches at an average of 24.18 tells you that.

Davies should be in right now I can't for the life of me understand why he was dropped and he also has 100+ strike rate in all but one of his innings. Keiswetter needs to improve playing spin the times he has made decent starts he always gets out or goes in his shell when spin comes on also his keeping was poor on this tour. All this being said Davies and Kieswetter should be in the up and coming squads fighting it out.

Would also like to know what peoples thoughts on Mustard were, dont remember him doing alot wrong same as Davies.
still think Butler or Bairstow would b next in line for the gloves.

Mustard did nothing wrong, and people in places to be heard (i.e: commentators and pundits), continue to say as much, but it seems for whatever reason he's well out of the selectors thoughts and thats even more baffling when you consider he was the wicket-keeper with the highest average in the first division last year.

I'm not certain his technique is good enough. But I haven't seen enough

He was spotted in county cricket hitting the ball hard, opening up in one day games and keeping wicket, that's pretty much the criteria in recent times :lol:

EDIT: Realised you meant while in the England team. He hit a quickfire 80 in NZ, kept well but was steady rather than spectacular - worth another series at least.

I'd stick with Kieswetter. Otherwise we'll just rotate through another 2-3 keepers and find that none of that are able to open, score at 100+, average 30+, and keep wicket exceptionally well.

We need to pick the nucleus of our side and stick with it through the next couple of years.
 
from the except of swanny's autiobiog i read in teh sun it seems believable that mustard was dropped as much for being an irresponsible pisshead [and i mean that in the nicest possible way:lol:] as his stats

The beauty of Mustard as a bloke was that he was completely oblivious that he'd just dropped himself in it. He did it time and again.

He missed the bus many times and, because the seating on flights was done alphabetically, Mustard and Moores were always next to each other.

Mustard seeps alcohol through his pores. So he'd be sitting next to the coach, smelling of booze and sleeping through every flight.

:lol: Good piece that. Mustard should have had more opportunities but I probably wouldn't go back now. Davies should never have been dropped - you never truly know whether a player will make it at international cricket but Davies certainly deserves a decent shot at it.
 
I would give Morgan (when fit) the gloves and pick a better batsman.

Morgan has done it for Ire in ODIs and is not so outstanding in the field that we would miss him - eg. unlike AB de Villiers for SA.

He seems to be being groomed for captaincy, personally I'd leave him to that and concentrating on his batting rather than burden him further with a job he'll only do for England.

Davies didn't overly impress me in the series against Australia, looked a bit out of his depth and too limited with the number of strokes available to him. Don't remember seeing much of him this season so I don't know if he's improved. And everyone who bats at the Oval seems to get a lot of runs quickly.
