Striker
fails, so do Somerset?

Has a side ever relied on one player so much.

If you take out Tresco they would do well to finish third bottom IMO

Hard to disagree. He's absolutely instrumental to them. Had he been on England duty (which he undoubtedly would be had it not been for his well documented problems) Somerset would be also rans at best and relegation strugglers at worst. Love watching him bat as well. The most naturally gifted striker of a ball the country has produced in the past twenty years in my opinion. His average of 45 in test cricket is superb considering he played in an era when the bowling across the world was still world class.

And he knows his duckworth Lewis....

He's clearly their best player but they also have Hildreth, Compton, Kieswetter, Buttler, Suppiah and Trego which is a fairly strong batting line-up. It's their bowling attack that lets them down as only Kartik is really of a good standard, the rest find nothing of out what is admittedly a flatbed down at Taunton.

I personally dont think their batting is that good tbh and is masked by the fact they can bat poorly and get 400 most weeks at Taunton which is why they have not single batsman in the England side. Keiswetter hasnt done much of note when given a chance

Kieswetter was probably England's most consistent batsman in the last ODI series :-?

Hildreth a regular in Lions side's over the last 2 seasons.

Trescothick would still be playing for England now if he wanted to.

So there's 3 there or there abouts at England level but I do agree with your point about the pitch, any half decent batsman should score well down there.

If Hildreth has been playing for the Lions side for 2 years, one must question why he has never really been strongly spoken about in terms of making the step up.

Mooted but hardly a clamour as the likes of Bopara, Morgan and now Taylor are all ahead in the pecking order

I agree, he's older than the rest aswell, I think he might be short of international class but is still a fine county batsman.

Hildreth only averages 34 this year despite playing on the batsmen's paradise that is Taunton.

Trescothick absolutely carries that team, especially when Kieswetter is away with England. Tres is still one of my favourite English batsman of the last decade, a truly wonderful player.

Over the last year or two when they have had the debates about the next one off the block ive always vouched for Taylor when most were going for Hildreth on the weight of runs. I had seen Hildreth look suspect against the moving ball and Taylor has always looked a class act in the Ian Bell mould to me.

Yes the same Ian Bell I would have dropped a while ago

not to mention the worlds worse wicket keeper ;-)

you have had some golden moments on this board with your insight

You really shouldnt bring the Prior one up after last time when you pulled the thread up expecting to prove a point and all it did was prove that I said:

1) Prior in the WI was keeping wicket like an absolute novice. He actually conceded more byes that anyone in test history.
2) If he didnt do something drastically about his keeping his test place was compeltely unsustainable
3) He had to improve sharpish or he would be out on his ear.

I dont think there was anything in there that anyone would disagree with. Far more accurate than:

1) Jimmy Anderson isnt good enough for the England team
2) Just wait til Jimmy goes to Aus
3) Just wait til Jimmy plays the Indians
3) England will never get to number one with Jimmy in the team

He's certainly got some of the hallmarks of Bell at that age, excellent against spin, moves his feet well and seems to have a good temperment and appetite for big scores.

In the last 12-18 months I'd have gone for Hildreth as next in line behind Morgan but I've definitley been won over by Taylor and would like to see him get a chance in the near future. Back up batsman in India possibly?
