Privileged to see him at Roker Park in a 6-2 win against Sheffield United.

Considering the scoreline, he was outstanding in the game. Excellent player.

His goal against us in that game, was the best goal by an away player I have ever seen.

The whole ground applauded it. That's what makes Sunderland fans the best.

I seem to remember we had a £800,000 record bid accepted for him but he wouldn't come - or is my memory playing tricks ......

What a great night that was ......... one of my favourite games at Roker Park.

Even snowed for a short time ;)

Aye a great game. Very entertaining, and I always loved a night match. Stands out in the memory.

From the book:

25th April 1979

Siddall, Gregoire, Gilbert, Docherty, Clarke, Elliott, Arnott, Rostron, Brown, Buckley, Rowell

Att 29,822

Rostron 3 (2 pens) Lee Brown & Gilbert

Watched from the front of the clockstand paddocks, one of the few matches I can remember properly from my early days

Can you corroborate that?

Aye it snowed Sabella was diferent class, got the ball on the half way line beat about 6 and put in the bottom corner whole ground applauded.

Aye brilliant goal;- was it not straight from the restart after one of our goals? I remember him dribbling everyone..superb player

Am I making this up or was it that if we won by 4 goals we'd go top. That might be bollocks but there's no doubt it was in the top 5 games at roker I went to.

Was down at Sheff Utd when he ripped us to bits down there, think it was 4-2 to them (might have been the same season). He was class that day.

Just seen that link and that's the game I was on about, 3-1 it was.

3-2 and its on the link above. I headed for the exit when the third went in and missed our second. We got locked in for a while, and it was absolute chaos down below the stand. I could hardly breathe.
Sabella was a class act.

Scary, I was at that game! 33 years ago, where does the time go? I was behind that goal and remember the mayhem when we scored the first goal!

We did put in a bid for Sabella at the time, but he dithered and we pulled out of the deal. As Ken Knighton said at the time "If a player can't make up his mind after 3 weeks whether he wants to join Sunderland, then he's not the player for us".

Brilliant goal and a brilliant game. It did flutter snow as I recall.

Hard to believe it was such a long time ago!

I was arrested but it was totally worth it

Sabella was unplayable in the first game - one of the best individual performances I have seen against us. Was one of my earliest away games, hot day, loads down from Sunderland, hell on before and after the game.

We must have tried to sign him every summer for 10 years. His wife was the stumbling block apparently, she did not rate the shopping opportunities in Sunderland, despite a guided tour of Jackie Whites Market - theres no pleasing some folk.
