this is the only place the fairs cup gets debated.I've never heard a song about it whilst at the match, it rarely gets a mention on any forum I go on bar this one, even the players only got a half hearted reception when paraded at half time once.no one really cares about it apart from on here.of course we are going to count it among our honours, it was a good achievement within europe. I wonder how you would regard it if for example you had won it twice.........we would never hear the end of it imo!

You know what, for all the chomps, whooshes, merangues, etc that this thread has thrown up, the bottom line is if SAFC had won the Fairs cup, we would be crowing on about it like the mags. Don't care if it is not recognised by UEFA, or some teams never turned up it is a trophy they won and can't be taken back. So just accept it lads, walk away from the taunts and let them wallow in what little glory they can cling onto.

That would be because it was brought up about one of your lot. Sunderland fans weren't sitting discussing it amongst themselves as nobody gives a toss. Some mag comes on giving it the big un about it, sparking a discussion off about whether its a "major" trophy or not.

Ignoring the last line , a rare bit of sense shines through the murky fog that is RTG.

Actually, as always, it was brought up by a mackem and I simply replied.

count as an honour?

if it wasnt why would barca bother mentioning it?

In the same way that the official NUFC website lists the Texaco Cup and Anglo-Italian Cup on their list of honours ............ I've said it before Shints, fair play that you won it etc etc but the Mags who are deluded are the ones who claim it was the UEFA Cup :-D

Just as deluded as Barca. ;)

Yes ok Newcastle during the 90's where the in thing. We had to suffer watching you lot challenge for titles and play in Europe. We didn't like it one bit. You've won a lot of fans within the Sky generation but no trophies. But now the winds of change are blowing. It's NUFC turn to be in our shadow just like Liverpool are in Man Utd's now. Things change. We've the best chairman in the EPL, a owner who is happy to sit in the background and good manager and the makings of a good squad. So the facts blow this NUFC is a better run football club than us out of the water. Plus it's a lot harder to get into Europe than it was back in your hey day. The top four is pretty much named before a ball is kick and with Spurs and Liverpool chopping at the heels of the big four the rest of us are living of the scraps. You can harp on about the Keegan-era and European nights but those days are over. That's in the past. Nothing we can do about it. It's the here and now that really matters. You can lie to the world and his wife that it doesn't bother you that we are the top dogs again. (Check the history before 1992). But by the way most Mags I know and the ones seem to post on here get pissed off when people bring this up. Otherwise why post on here saying it doesn't bother you and you're still a 'big club and better than us'?

Yet you won't answer something I've now asked you 3 times.

"Anyway, I've answered all of your questions and will answer any others so, why did 3 teams not bother to turn up, for their games, in the season Newcastle won it?"

Picking and choosing which questions to answer just tars you as another deluded Mag who doesn't have a clue ......... people respect Shints because he can answer the difficult questions and admit when he's been proved wrong.

You're just a piece of shit tbh and answer with smilies and sarcasm when you don't know the answer or do know it but don't have the courage to say so.

Anyway, how the fuck am I to know the logistics of European football teams from 1969? Do you want be to get on the phone and ring them up? Which three teams allegedly didn't bother turning up?

excellent post, however if you mean top dogs because you finished above us, then yes you are, but overall I would say we are pretty even at the moment, it could go either way tbf.i see why you are confident though as quinny would be much prefferable to ashley. big season coming up for us both.

Oh no, here we go again - giving it the big un just like last season and being made to look pricks after a 5-1 mauling.

Look man, by all means be positive and excited about the coming season for us, but don't start becoming arrogant like them up the road - we're supposed to be better than them - keep your powder dry and let's see what happens.

FWIW, they have a canny squad and if they manage to keep Enrique, Tiote and Barton they will finish top 10 no bother much as I hate to say it.

that's not a bad constructive post tbh.

I worked with a lot of mackums at the keegan time and your right they were devastated by our lofty position and European jaunts. Naturally I would be the same. Also iv never hid my admiration for Quinn, a likeable bloke who puts the fans first. A true rarity in this day and age.

I do however think your getting a bit carried away with the in our shadow point. Last season we were separated by a point, hats off you finnished higher but we dominated the derbies. There was a fannys hair between the clubs and in my opinion we are as level now as we have been in a long long time. The gulf however in the mentioned keegan era was probably the biggest in the two clubs history. To try and now claim it's the opposite is a but absurd, even allowing for how much you wish this was the case.

No one's going mental mate, it's just a bit of fun.

In all honesty, last season wasn't the only time we've finished above Newcastle recently.
Even before your relegation you were quite poor and the wheels were falling off.
We've been here for 5 seasons whereas you've been in the Championship.
You signed nuggets like Kuqi last season and are signing unproven players now.
I'd say that's more than a fanny's hair,

Here's some info on Ujpest Dozsa. The Fairs Cup by 1969 was a proper competition. League Winners were involved as the European Cup and Cup Winners Cup were for the chosen few. UEFA wanted more competitions and more teams in their competitions - The Fairs Cup was the obvious choice.

Anyway Ujpest were a top team and I have no quarms in proudly saying we won it. Yes I know we got in via 1 city 1 team but we now live at a time where The Champions League is contested by teams finishing as low as 4th. You can only win the competitions that are there and play by the prevailing rules. The fact that Sports Night showed the match (which was very rare back then) shows it's importance. I have the DVD if you're interested. No, didn't think so. You just carry on in your make believe land.

Magic Újpest

The year 1967, when manager Lajos Baróti was signed by the club leaders, marked the start of a new golden era. After two silver medals, Újpest won the league in 1969 and played in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup final in the same year (and lost with a result of 2–6 on aggregate against Newcastle United). The team started an amazing 7 wins in a row in the league, Újpest won all the seasons from 1969 to 1975, setting incredible post-war records like scoring exactly 500 goals in the seven seasons or losing only 4 home matches in 10 seasons. The club enjoyed success in the other domestic competition, winning the Hungarian Cup for the first time in 1969, and also in 1970 & 1975. On international level besides the Inter-Cities Faris Cup final, Újpesti Dózsa reached the European Cup quarter-finals in three consecutive year after 1972 and once even played in the semi-final in 1974, where only the later winners Bayern Munich could put a stop to the campaign. The club was considered one of the best teams in Europe beating such teams like English champions Leeds United in 1969, Spanish champion Valencia CF in 1971, Scottish champion Celtic Glasgow in 1972, or Portuguese top team Benfica in 1973.

The 'landmark' of the team – as always for Újpest – was goal scoring. The famous Fazekas – Göröcs – Bene – Dunai II – Zámbó attacking formation, invented and led by manager Lajos Baróti, scored dozens of goals, attracted thousands of football fans both in Hungary and outside the country. Bene became 5 times topscorer of Hungary, Dunai II and Fazekas won the Silver boot award for scoring the second most goals in the continent.

It was such a proper competition that 3 of the clubs, in 1969, didn't bother to turn up and Leeds United were put through on the toss of a coin.
I believe that still happens regularly in the Champions League.
