How he only played a handful of times or South Africa is beyond me, he might have been a world class cricketer. Apparently when Hanse Cronje retired as captain he recommended Benks to be the next captain, just as well he didn't end up skipper cos we'd be worse of than we are now! How long as he played here? Anyone know his story? Also a great guy when I've spoke to him a couple of times at the ICG

Not the most detailled career summary but here you go.

Benks is god

This sums it up better. ;)

obviously stats dont tell the whole story but i remember wondering how he had played as many times as he has for south africa considering his record for them is very average.

total legend for durham of course, the man is our hero

When he first came here he lived in Worm Hill Terrace, Fatfield. Such people are destined for greatness.

A pal of mine plays for Burnley CC in the Lancashire league, he always speaks of Benks with great affection as it was Dale who learnt him to hold a bat correctly!

did benks play pro at burnley cc then?

that will soften the blow to my burnley supporting workmate who lost a bet that lancs would post 300+

He was considered a bit of a one-day specialist early on hence no test cricket. If he'd been English he'd have played 50 tests+ imho.

A legend and ambassador and, I've no doubt, future coach as well.

Players would seem to agree

Great win at fortress Liverpool. Marching on. Benki highest Durham run scorer ever, gone past Jon Lewis. Amazing achievement, sheer class.

Has to be the best signing Durham have ever made.... Has played a huge part in turning Durham into the no1 county in 1st class cricket.....
