Thought you had to name any potential substitutes before the game starts though.....?

Only if they're expected/knowing to be away. E.G. The 2 Irish lads for Warwicks knew they'd be away, therefore Warwicks had to name subs. Onions wasn't expected to be away, so we haven't had to name anyone. But I can't see them calling him up anyway.

you get a warm glow from following Durham that you just don't get from Sunderland - I can't quite get used to the idea that my team really are quite good, it's an alien concept :-D

Apart from Tres, Stokes and Benks must be the most in-form players on the county circuit right now.

Colly should be in the team shortly ... but tough to figure out who to drop. Smith would seem the obvious one but there no other opener (maybe Stoneman comes in) and he just made a big hundred. I think I'd go for:

Di Venuto
Stoneman
Muchall
Stokes
Benkenstein
Collingwood
Mustard
Blackwell
+3 seamers.

Canny long batting line-up!

EDIT: canny harsh dropping borthwick anarl, leading wicket taker before the lancs game, lowest wicket taking average, good form with the bat

i think it will be benks to make way for collingwood - what with the limited overs captaincy he'll be playing more cricket this year than anticipated so i imagine he'll find his rest in the county games. unless colly takes over captining those sides? benks doesnt really want to and colly wants to be captaining england, so its a win win surely?

Pardon?

As long as Stoneman/Smith/Muchall/Coetzer are in the side, class acts like Benks are undropable. I can see Colly taking over the limited overs side of things, like.

not saying on form he wants dropping

its just that as an older head in the squad the likes of he and diva have regularly been ducking out of the limited stuff in recent years, to give time to the younger stokes, borthwicks, stoneys etc

now that benks is captaining 40 & 20 over stuff he can no longer rest during those games so i imagine he will be rested during county champ games, at lets face it, tehy are like for like, very useful with bat or ball, good fielder, good organiser and wise old sage

Form or no form, Benks is a different level to the four players I mentioned, they can play ahead of Benks when the title is won, and not before.

he may not be if he plays every game, sure a bit of rest will keep him tip top.

plus geoff cook has always been focused on tomorrow as much as today, as has benks [eg passing on the captaincy to smith]

look at muchall this season, hes been superb. if bensk taking the odd rest will encourage the growth of teh likes of coetzer, rocky, smith and mucahll to be the diva and benks of tomorrow then we cant argue.

jsut look at what happened when we blooded youngsters like borthwick and stoke by resting benks and diva in teh pro40/FP 50, i have faith that whatever is done, it will be done for the good of the team and be the right choice

Just watched the day 2 highlights (anybody NOT know where to see them?), it's a joy watching Stokes' shotmaking. Brilliant.

Anyway, Durham take the lead without any further loss, 316/3

It was mentioned on SSN this morning that Stokes is the youngest player since Dennis Compton to reach 5 first class centuries. Tidy little achievement that.

Stokesy to open his arms out and declare by tea please!

Lancs may survive this, but we've given them the absolute run around.

Going top whatever I think? Dunno what is happening behind us mind

As long as we don't lose wickets in the next 6

probably everyone knows this but id never heard this one before, about denis compton

As with many other sportsmen of his generation he lost some of his best years to the Second World War, during which he served in the army in India. It was in India, however, that he began his close friendship with his Australian counterpart as Test cricketer, footballer and national hero, Keith Miller. They played against each other in the match at Calcutta between the Australian Services team and East Zone. The match was interrupted by rioting when Compton was on 94 and one of the rioters who had invaded the pitch ran up to Compton and said "Mr Compton, you very good player, but the match must stop now"
