Philippines 0 Iraq 5 World Cup qualifier 26th March 2024

Left work at 6pm.and got to the stadium for 6.30pm, taxi was only £2.50 , can't believe how cheap the taxis are even after so many years working here.

Tickets were anything from 100 pesos (£1.50) tfor standing in the open, up to 530 pesos (£7.50) for the best seats, which is what I went for.

The teams met last Saturday, Iraq won 1-0 with an 84th minute goal and this was the return game of the double header. Philippines new mangers Tom Saintfiet was in charge of his first home game.

The game itself, Iraq started off the better side but Philippines had a few attacks too. The first goal was after 13 minutes from a penalty. A careless challenge from the defender, bit of a soft penalty really but the correct decision. Etheridge, the Birmingham goalie git a hand to the penalty but Hussein's shot was too powerful , 0-1 after 13 minutes. The 200 or so Iraquis very happy.

Philippines responded well and the majority of the crowd of 10,014 were on their feet when Rublico had a great effort from the edge of the area but his shot was just wide.

The game shifted back to the Iraquis and after 30 minutes increased their lead after an initial shot was blocked, but the ball rebounded nicely for Elabali and his left foot shot was too strong for the goalie. 0-2 30 minutes.

The second goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Philippines and after 37 minutrs the Iraquis went further ahead. Hussein was one in one with the last defender, looked a foul to me as he knocked the defender down but was allowed to continue and comfortably slotted home ast the keeper. 37minutes, 0-3.

Iraq almost made it 4 when Philippines lot the ball trying to play it out from defence but the goalies mutate went unpunished after the shot was over te bar.

Half time 0-3.

Second half began with Philippines having a few attacks but not creating anything and the game reverted to it's first half pattern of Iraq dictating control of the game.

Iraq seemed stronger Al over the pitch and the difference was really noticeable particularly in their defence where the 2 centre halves had the Philippine forwards in their pockets and the number 8 for Iraq was running the midfield.

After 61 minutes the visitors extended their lead with a shot from Iqbal after some good skill.0-4.

At this stage it was going to be a case of how many, and the fifth goal arrived after 78 minutes from a corner where Tahseen met the corner with a towering header. 78 minutes 0-5 .

The Philippines then rallied for the last few minutes and almost scored with a delightful ball across the face of the goal but o-one was there for a tap in. The home crowd stayed to the end , hardly anyone left but their chants of *Issa lang* (just one) didn't happen and Iraq saw out the 3 minutes of injury time for a comfortable win.

Iraq are top of the group with 4 wins from 4 games and Philippines are bottom of the group with just 1 point from 4 games.

Got home ( 5 miles away) in 30 minutes on the train , not bad going in Manila.

Full time 0-5.

Highlights are here if anyone wants to see them.
