Carberry and Lumb have done nothing on the international scene though.
KP is England's all time leading run scorer man and the series in which he apparently reached his nadir he was our leading run scorer in that as well!
Bringing him back won't transform us from also rans to world beaters but he is still more than good enough to command a spot in all formats.
I've said it before on here about Shane warne who didn't get on with the establishment and openly slated John Buchanan yet still got picked as the Aussies don't cut off their nose to spite their face!
Our top brass are and always have been terrified of anyone who doesn't toe the party line.

Lumb won the ICC T20. He hit a century on ODI debut last year.
Carberry was one of our better batsmen in the 13-14 Ashes,

If we are selecting players on former glories, Cook and Prior would be a shoo-in.

KP won the t-20 and was player of tournament.
Carberry didn't score as many as KP down under.
Neither have even close to the pedigree he has either.
Cook would most certainly still be opening the batting come the West Indies test series as he's a top top player who will come good.
Butler is now a better bet than prior but still not sure he up to scratch at test level.
Pieterson is comfortably good enough to be in our side and shouldn't have been put out to grass after the disaster down under.

Good enough based on what? Slogging dad's army all round the MCG?

He hasn't topped the batting averages in any series in the last five years.

Who are we going to drop to accommodate him? James Taylor, who is only 25 and averages 44 at ODI? Joe Root?

I am yes.
Trott just needed to show he was mentally right and has done by captaining lions. Straight back in no questions asked and can open batting as he's said he's happy to do.
Root will eventually open again in next 18 months to two years so batting at three is a natural progression.
KP still our box office player and it's the ECBs fault we find ourselves in this ridiculous situation.
Bell still a quality player and Stokes needs to be given a run as ability is certainly there.
Butler is best of not a great bunch and same for Rashid really.
Need to find another seamer from somewhere then hope that broad and Anderson can recapture some form.
Ballance perhaps a little unlucky, I do like him and he'd be next cab off rank. Watch out for Adam Lyth as well.
Tough decisions need to be made though and that's the way id go.

The Aussies will devour Ali mind.
Hasn't got a clue with the short stuff and they've got genuine pace.
His bowling is ordinary as well but to be fair we don't have any real options in spin department.
I agree ballance will be England's number 3 for the next year and will probably do ok but trott and KP are proven class acts at the top level and I'd go with them.

Ali is a better bowler than Rashid from what I have seen

He was excellent against India, how short is your memory

He finished the series with 19 wickets; the fourth highest haul any spinner had claimed against India in a Test series outside the subcontinent and the best since 1967 when Ray Illingworth bowled 30 more overs and claimed one more victim.

He is our best spin option currently, and is better than you give him credit for

He did ok against India but Rashid has pretty much double the amount of first class wickets that Ali has.
Not outrageous to suggest Ali by the way but we aren't playing a unmotivated nation who don't particularly care about test cricket this summer we are playing two nations who will be coming here looking to give us a real smack on the arse.
I personally don't think Ali is a frontline spinner. Rashid is unproven at international level and can be a bit erratic but he bowls wicket taking balls. Be refreshing to go with something different rather than the typically English safe pair of hands.

I don't think Ali is a "Safe pair of hands", he is a risk but it would be absolutely mental to drop him from the test side, his bowling was improving every game he played.

you can't just discount runs and wickets against India

I watched all of the India Australia series recently and although they got beat, the fought hard and did a lot better than they did in England


England deserve credit for the way they played

If they hadn't been so abject against Sri Lanka i would but to me the Indians basically rolled over and had their tummy tickled.
So what would your test team be as things stand?
