Hopefully a lot of this can be remedied by not being stuck in some weird limbo between sumo and conventional!

And yeah, on my second attempt of the 5th rep I was more or less up before the bar starting leaving my left hand. That's why I gave myself a frustrated slap on the thigh

So a lot of this is going to be taking more time to think about my deadlifts, rather than just trying to move the weight as fast as I can.
I did enjoy the hissyfit at the end.

Off to squat with multiple world record holder :D

Will be a gash session on my part. He asked me yesterday after I'd done two sessions of working up to singles. Meant to be rest day but fuck it

How did it go?

You had another crack at that 235kg yet?

The other bloke's wife who was due to train was taken to hospital so didn't end up squatting. Deadlifts were a bit shit yesterday, so having today and the weekend off. Will be working up to a heavy single on squats on Monday. I've been doing most sessions with one of the top squatters that's ever been in his weight, which is a big help going in to these next two comps. The European qualifier in 10 weeks is where I'll be shooting for 250kg squat.

How are you finding deadlifts after adjusting your form?

Loads better. Did them on Wednesday with a top set of 160kg, so not an increase on the previous week's session but I thought I'd keep it the same what with tweaking my set up.

It was quite an easy set though so I think I can make a bigger jump than normal next Wednesday. Not rushing the set and having the weight static made it so much easier to get good bar speed when actually performing the lift. Hopefully I'll be at the stage where I can hit my PR (210kg) for 5 reps within a few months.

Once I'm there, I need to decide whether I'm going to keep plodding along with this programme or whether I should have a crack at a meet and train to prepare for that.

There's a meet in 10 weeks that's a qualifier for the GPC Euros next year. It's their last full power of the year and will be plenty of novices. You should do that one mate. I'm targetting a 250kg squat at it.

Where can I find details of that?

If you're on Facebook go to the GPC GB page. If not let me know and I'll PM you some contact details.

If you decide to go for it (which I'd encourage you to do) I can help you out if necessary with picking openers or even if it's just things on the day.

Could be well worth a crack. Looking at things like qualifying totals for further competitions and whilst that's not the goal really, in my weight class for raw lifting in juniors, the lifts I was at about 4 months ago before I fell off the wagon are around the B standard. So if I could get somewhere near there I'd feel like I could hit a respectable total.

Edit: I know you can go and people will be supportive no matter what but I'm terrified of looking daft in every part of my life

The GPC British this year was an unreal set up (the warm up room had 3 monolifts for starters). They put on good meets which is always a big plus.

Like you say though, powerlifting is a very supportive sport. I knew it was before I competed but was still surprised. Will be plenty of good lifters there like Bulldog (won't be competing though) ready to help out and give advice

Dreading tonight's session. Squats and deadlifts. I've had a dull ache in my legs all day. No idea why but I can tell tonight will hurt badly!

Are you doing the competition mate? I can ask Dave about entry forms if so.

I think this one is going to be a bit too soon for me and the timing isn't ideal, I've probably got the biggest three months or so of my PhD coming up and won't have many whole days to spare to go down to Berkshire (iirc that's where it is).

I've promised myself I will be going to a meet next year though, even if I can't lift any more than I can now.

Edit:

Re: tonight's session. Got through my allotted squats through gritted teeth but bombed at 3 reps of 170kg on deadlifts. Couldn't even move the f***ing thing

Aye, totally understandable.

You'll do well with your numbers tbh from what I've seen. You'll also learn a lot and probably get motivated by others competing. Where's your bench at?

Currently 80kg at 5x5. It's still my weakest lift by far.

No idea what weight class I'll be in a year mind. Not something to worry about for my first meet though.

I'll come with you, and we can do one together obviously I'll beat you but I need to aim for one next year aswell

Just missed a pitiful deadlift in training. Time to taper down for the competition, because based even on deadlifts from the past few weeks, I know I'm much stronger.
