f***ing pathetic. Im sure a few years ago "coloured" was the PC word of choice, now you get castigated even if you say innocently. Theres a lot of shite about racism nowadays, i wish people would be offended by intent, not words. If he didnt mean to offend (which he obviously didnt) then just move on.

What are you talking about? Black people like being called black because they're black. If that's what black people want to be called then what's the problem?

Loads of them arent actually black though, Chris Hughton is hardly black, but my point is that you mentioned that non-white people dont like being lumped into one big group, well whats "black" then? Thats one big group that lumps everyone from Lewis Hamilton to Bruno Martins Indi into the one size fits all "black" category, if they dont like one group why are they happy all being called black, its bollocks

Yes you can, ffs. If this thread shows anything it's how people get themselves absolutely tied into knots because of some hugely wrong assumptions on this topic.

I know you can say black ffs, my point is that seb says non whites dont like being lumped into one group whilst saying theyre happy all being caled black, which doesnt make sense. If his point was true then you couldnt say black, as his point is wrong, you can

They're all of Afro-Caribbean descent.

Your "coloured" term would have Africans, Arabs, Punjabs, Turks etc, etc all in the same category.

Right, next, Asian, is it really right that we just use "Asian" when sometimes we mean the good folk of Pakistan and surrounding countries and when sometimes we mean, for example, Japanese people despite the fact they dont look alike in the slightest and are 3,000 miles away from each other? Are we meant to use "oriental appearance" to refer to the latter or is that wrong. Just thought id start another daft debate

Is this issue with the word 'coloured' not the implication that white is the default colour and anything else is a deviation?
I'd never heard the 'being lumped in together' issue before.

Your Gran, yes because old white ladies from North East England are the people we've always turned to when we want to avoid inadvertently offending black people
You're getting your knickers in a twist.

It's about language changing. I've never met anyone who used coloured as a racist slur.

It reminds me of a scene from Roots. The father was using the term Negro. He was told the you can't use that word. "Well I've been trying to get people to call me that all my live!"

Just correct their grammar mistake instead of calling them The Grand Master of KKK.

1) What grammar mistake are you referring to?
2) If you notice I started on this thread by saying it was a storm in a teacup and no doubt no offence was intended. I only pointed out that "coloured" has always been a dodgy word. Dodgy. Not openly racist, and I never said anywhere that it was used as or intended as a slur. I said it was dodgy.

Just caught a bit on the news that he's in bother for calling black people coloured, is there more to the story or is that it? Didn't realise Sherlock was such a racist, should be banned from telly, have his nuts chopped off and his eyes slapped straight.

its racial-ageddon

I had my HR person analyse this issue recently, so that the office was fully compliant with current appropriate language and phraseology
It was important to develop and define a term that would be stable across a 10 year horizon.

Although some may complain...after all there is always one, the preferred term is "people of another hue"

its not just that is it nobody wants to be called a racist or say the wrong thing that sort of over the top reaction is breeding fear of saying the wrong thing
