Gus Poyet blames under-strength squad for Black Cats' struggles

wouldn't bother me in the slightest if he got the bullet - I think he's clueless - there and thousands of fans pay good money to watch the lads every week and they can all see that where we need strengthening so why can't the management of the club? A cup run and a few results at the end of the season doesn't mask the fact that he has failed to move us forward at all. In fact from the performances this season we are going to be in a more desperate position than the Italian lunatic left us in

I’m a head coach,’ he said. ‘I don’t make the squad, that’s not my job.

‘I’ve got four defenders, I play what I’ve got.

‘I’ll take responsibility at a set-piece – it was me, I pick the team and put it on the pitch.

‘The rest, I’m sorry, I’m not going to take.’

Aye. Nowt to do with you mate.

I like Poyet, but managers / head coaches whatever you call them should lead not make excuses. If he has something to say about his employment and employers he should keep his trap shut. Public criticism however thinly veiled is gross misconduct in my book.

Oh, and on top of that, regardless of what he says, he will also have an involvement in recruitment, whether that be stating the style of player he wants or, more likely, doing that and giving final approval to signings (he definitely had the final say not to sell cattermole so i guess he has the same on incoming deals). If he doesnt have enough power to have a say in the transfer market (affecting his ability to get results which is his job) then he should have brought it up when negotiating his new contract. Hes signed it now which suggests to me that he feels he can get results. He might yet, we're early in the season, but he needs to drop the f***ing excuses

Good enough for what? To stay up with a good degree of comfort? Certainly. The finished article? No way near. If I had a go at you it will have only been down to your unrealistic expectations of what a club on a budget with an established squad on big contracts can afford to do in one window. This was always a 2-3 window job. Nevertheless we've got more than enough quality to do what we need to this year. Gus has absolutely no place moaning about squad depth after that performance. It defies all logic - particularly since he was telling all and sundry how this was now his team only a week ago.

Can't understand how you can say that tbh. They have seen off 2 or 3 managers, survived season before last with PDC's miracle and last year with a miracle of biblical proportions. We haven't really improved it by that much if at all we could survive but seriously nobody could of thought "comfortably" at the beginning of the season end of transfer window. I would of said more in hope than expectation and the expectation was for a long old season again.

Hmm, not liking what I'm reading in that article. This shit should be kept indoors....

Everyone knew last season there was a mammoth rebuilding task needed. So called bedwetters on here called it said we didn't do enough. Gus was too busy talking about Borini til the end of the transfer window and beyond. I find it hard he can push the blame elsewhere. If he didn't have such a man-crush on Borini we may actually have made more progress on actual transfers.
He isn't in charge of transfers though. Congerton is.

Poyet must have some influence over transfers. I can't believe given a free reign to scour the world for talent Congerton would have decided upon Bridcutt and Buckley.
Poyet, like most managers I suppose, is first and foremost concerned about HIS reputation and thats what he tries to preserve at all costs in the face of a potentially damaging defeat. That's what I find most distasteful about his post match comments - he's not really that bothered about the club or fans its Gus Poyet he's looking out for.

Di Canio is rightly derided on here for such divisive outbursts. We need unity and fight, not this.

Were Wembley and the great escape down to De Fanti then Gus? You were more than happy to take the plaudits. Shut-up and get on with your job or fuck off back to The Championship.

Short has really ballsed-up with these DoF/manager appointments as they clearly don't work together at all.

Sounds like he is bemoaning lack of depth rather than questioning the players he did get. We have left ourselves very very short.

Why on earth didn't we use our second loan? It seemed a no brainer....

The Mail shit-stirring after a great gesture by the club and players. There's a surprise. Which mag on their staff wrote this anti safc piece?

Glad to see our amazing supporters on here love it though. Moaning cunnts.

We went into the season with 2(TWO) full backs on our books, it was only a matter of time before it came to bite us on the arse. It was breathtaking incompetence from Congerton.

No surprise at who the writer is here. Kinnear was right about Simon Bird. Any chance to stick the knife in to SAFC and he'll take it.

That said, Gus does seem to distance himself from any blame and it's a shame that his frustrations cant be kept in house. What are outbursts like this going to say to the players? How do you then motivate them and build up their confidence? I know he's not talking about ability in his quote, it's more focused at the number of players he's been left with. Perhaps if he made more of an effort to work WITH Congerton, they may be able to have a clear and agreed view on their goals going forward and achieve them with more success.

Everything he says is correct. He just shouldn't have said it so publicly or at least explicitly. I like him, despite Saturday I do think he has done a good job with a load of shite at his disposal and has certainly made progress since DiCanio left. In general(huge caveat!) we've at least become hard to beat. I lament that he was not given the funds Bruce was.
