Alonso adapting to new role at Fiorentina

He is good enough for us, I actually liked him.

However, a left back is a defender and he can not defend. He is caught out of position, is slow to tack back and struggles to tackle.

He has a decent shot, a lovely crosser of the ball and has a decent throw and maybe because over the years we've had a lack of a natural left footed player coupled with memories of Collins, Richardson, Colback and Bardsley ET al playing there, he didn't half flatter to deceive.

But you are correct. I am a "berk", but tend not to judge people on their opinions.

I think you are if you believe that? Why does Poyet rate him so highly then and desperate to get him even now?

To say he can't defend is just a lie

Every single player we sign will have weaknesses, or they wouldn't be signing for us, to say he isn't good enough for us is absolutely ludicrous

So what is his weakness?? If it's a lie about his defending, then you say every player has a weakness what is his?? Or are you saying his defending is his weakness which is what I said?

I don't have to justify how wrong you are. It's a complete fallacy that Alonso can't defend, and you've fallen for it.

If you read the post properly I said I liked him but he can't defend. The only reason we were ever in for him was simply his price tag and/or the possibility of getting another plodder off our books.

It is defiantly not because of his extreme talent. However, I wouldn't have been unhappy with him signing as he puts effort in and is sometimes decent. Make a good left midfielder.

I'm with you here.

He can defend, just not very well most of the time. The amount of times Brown and / or Borini covered his arse after getting caught out of position last year was scary. Think back to Hull at home when Brown had been sent off and Borini then subbed, Elmo tore Alonso a new one many, many times.

Theres obviously something that Gus feels he and the coaches can work with hence why we are supposedly still interested in him

It's all part of the brinksmanship in the close season imo.
Not saying it's the oracle but if you google..Marcos Alonso Wages, the figure 700k Euros comes up.
Fiorentina are not that well off in a league where even the real big teams like Juve are doing it tough these days.
Sure you get the odd 'marquee' like Cole and Tevez, but the Giacc's and the Alonso's are on an awful lot less.
Footballers don't do altruism, but they do venality...and they do it very very well.
'Stay where I am and learn a new playing role, or move to a better league and at least triple my salary'??? Hardly hand wringing and teeth gnashing stuff is it?
My take is Fiorentina know there's a few teams interested and they want to cash in, albeit I was under the impression fees had to be pre agreed with foreign loans????
Regardless I'm quite confident he'll be away from Fiorentina before the start of the new season, whether it's with us is a different question

I know that they don't always paint the picture but statistics say he was one of the best premier league defenders last season

People have made up their mind he's a bad defender and wont be swayed.
Just like Fletcher is a druggie, a drunk and a tramp to others
 
He's an excellent footballer, I really hope we sign him.
Having full backs comfortable on the ball is critical for the system that Gus employs
