Study all our great away performances in the past few seasons, and you'll see that on the day, we haven't been a team that has been "wowed" by the opposition. Nerves play a huge (under-rated) part of football, and I seriously think this is what happened against the Skunks. I'm still keeping my feet on the ground though as we haven't had that dodgy spell part of the season yet. So I'll still stick to what I said and think we'll
finish around 10th.

I've heard from mags who were there, when the bus arrived carrying our players there was a huge mob of scumcastle 'fans':)-?) ready & waiting for them, and they hit them with a huge wall of pure hatred. According to this lad, our players arses fell rit out, "you could see it in their faces" were his exact words

Fulham got into Europe despite having a terrible away record.

Fulham got into Europe with some very average players.

I'm only slightly interested in going to Slovan Neverheardaya, on a frosty Thursday, but psychologically the club needs to be there.

I'd be happier, personally, to have a weekend in London watching us beat Man Utd at Wembley in the Fa Cup final, which is half a dozen wins, but I realise that Europe would mark a stage in our progress.

Going into Europe to play unfashionable East European teams etc hasn,t done a lot of English sides much good in the past. Instead of kicking on lots of them have flopped in the league because the strain of competing in too many matches shows up too many shortcomings in the in depth quality of their squads.

We have the best squad we,ve had in living memory, and it would be able to achieve a higher league position out of Europe than ever it would achieve if it were to be distracted by midweek trips to say Tbilisi or Sofia.

Its only the Champions League thats really worthwhile, and being in the Eufa Cup would stop us ever being in a position to achieve that level.

I would much prefer domestic success to a mainly unprofitable run in the eufa cup

what a strange perspective... i don't think anyone will agree with you on that one!!!!

I do, The Europa League leaves me stone cold. It's a shite competition that gets in the way of proper footy.

It's The European equivalent of the Simod Cup.

Are you saying you woouldn't want sunderland to play in it if we qualified??? if so what are you wanting from sunderland afc bypass the europa league and straight for a league title???? it is the logical progression, finish mid table, the season after aim for europe then aim higher.

I would love to support the lads in europe anyone who doesn't clearly has some sort of mental issue!!!

No, I think it's a shite competition but would still be happy to go and watch them in it. (If and when we get the chance)

For all of us there has to be a point where we go over the edge.

I've noticed a few, on here, starting to talk about top 6 finishes and Europe only to be knocked back by other posters. This is understandable as we don't want to be seen as deluded or getting carried away.

However there has to be a point where if we continue our progress, even the most pessimistic, just think, "Bollocks to it, we're really going to do something and I'm going to enjoy it."

What's your point?

I hit that point quite some time ago, I'm as happy as a pig in shit with the way the club is going and as long as I don't have to worry about relegation I'll be happy. Don't get me wrong, I'd love us to push for Europe but at this point I'm happy with the stability we have...something we haven't had in my 29 years.

I can understand people clammering for success but I just can't get my head around the people who think we're doing shit and, for some reason, have a divine right to do better.

Coming off such a great win at Chelsea, if we thrash Everton I will start to really believe.

If not, I'll stay optimistic for a nice top 10 finish.

I know we all say that but didn't we only beat our first top 4 team quite recently?

Yeah, but you have to look at perfromnaces too - we really should have beaten Man Utd (Steed), Liverpool (Stupid goal) and Arsenal (Freak goal).

Lots to be optimistic about - more concerning is not finishing Blackburn imho.

Not sure if I have one, I would just like to get 40 points asap, then kick on from there.
Black Sunday scared me, I know our away form has been abysmal, but I had expected us to acquit ourselves well that day, the fact we did not got me very worried.
SB and the players then felt bloody awful and may well have been fuelled on that sort of used that feeling to play better in the next 3 games.

So Everton, who have often beaten us (easily) in the past will be a good indication.

For us Mackems, and I have been supporting Sunderland for 40+ years there are always ups and downs, so improving our away record and not having amid-season slump would move us up the table quite considerably.

But I go back to my original point, my 'tipping point' is when we get 40 points and there is lots of the season left..then I will be smiling all the time

Also cattermole's two sendings off so that's another 10 points.

WE'D BE TOP:lol::lol:
