For all of us there has to be a point where we go over the edge.

I've noticed a few, on here, starting to talk about top 6 finishes and Europe only to be knocked back by other posters. This is understandable as we don't want to be seen as deluded or getting carried away.

However there has to be a point where if we continue our progress, even the most pessimistic, just think, "Bollocks to it, we're really going to do something and I'm going to enjoy it."

What's your point?

I might be thinking of the Premier League.

I know there was a stat somewhere about it and I think it was Liverpool at home where we broke our duck. I'm not big on stats me like
Well I can definitely remember beating Man U, I think that was the last season at roker park, we beat Arsenal opening day of the season once at the SOL aswell around the time of Viera and co which was a while back...

I was referring more to instances like last season when we picked up a point at Man U, 3 points against Liverpool in the next game and then got beat off Birmingham the game after that, and then Wigan a few games later whilst beating Arsenal in between.

There are a few teams currently occupying the top four places who can't do that mind.

We need to back the Chelsea result up with a win against Everton and then make sure we apply ourselves properly over the games between then and New Year which should result in a decent points return.

Nobody should be getting carried away here, but if we are realistic this sort of opportunity wasn't even presented to us in the Reid years, partly because we didn't have the cash to go and get the right people in because we were viewed as yo-yo, and partly because there were so many teams who were better placed financially to blow us out of the water.

The number of clubs in that position today is vastly reduced, look at the traditional top eight - Chelsea and Arsenal still can and possibly Man Utd dependent upon Glazer situtation. Arsenal seem reluctant to splash the cash mind. Obviously City can outbid anybody, but the likes of Everton Villa don't appear to have that sort of wealth at their disposal anymore. Spurs may have, but they had a habit of paying seriously over the odds for people. Time will tell re Liverpool.

For what its worth I think that if we can hold our nerve over the next couple of months in the games where we should amass a good return, we could by right amongst it come the business end of the season.

We've all been here before I know and the Mags game is still raw for many.

But seldom have we harnessed a determination to put things right following such a major setback with the clout and can do attitude which currently seems to be prevalent throughout the club over the course of my lifetime.

Here's hoping

Haway the lads and FTM.

How can people be shouting for Europe / top 6 etc. etc. when:

a) our away record over a number of years in the prem is shite
b) we can never manage to string consecutive wins together

Calm ya skin, down (said in a laid back, deep carribean accent)

PS - can anyone of the anoraks out there confirm when we last won 4 / 5 / 6 games off the belt in the Prem or equivalent???

What's your point?

When we start showing decent football week in, week out. Like Fulham last year.

Don't think we will with such a young team. And I am pretty sure Bolo won't be repeating his Chelsea-performance week in week out.

Because this year is this year and we have a new set up that has beaten Man City ,Arsenal and Chelsea and drawn with Man United ,Liverpool and Tottenham.
What more do you f***ing want?
We can't finish top 6 even after beating half of them and drawing against the other half,by logic that means we have every chance of finishing in the top 6.
I'm not saying we will but where there's hope there's a chance and we have made one hell of a chance for ourselves.
The rest is up to the club and players, they either seize it or drop it, and only time will tell.

How about you wait until he doesn't before you decide.

Did we?

I agree with the rest of your post though.

Good one!

We have the personnel to finish 6th in this year's version of the PL. It's true that everything will have to go right: us having few injuries, the lads stay hungry and don't get their heads turned, Bent and Gyan forming a telepathic partnership, and we get a few breaks in close games. But it is possible. And I have this strange feeling the lads just might pull it off.

The attitude of the team seems to be changing, and the last two matches have seen our shape THE MOST ORGANIZED BY FAR I've seen in a Sunderland side for the past several years.

I think a new day may be dawning, but only time will tell. :)

PS Let the magic Gyan dance spread to all the squad as the goals start pouring in!

I'd honestly love to watch a game in the Europa League away from home, against some canny. We've not played a competitive game in Europe since 73, disgraceful really.

It'd be a hell of an achievement to finish 6th mind.

this. Me and a mate of mine talked about this during the Reidy era, swore that we'd go anyway, didn't matter. He asked me after I moved away if I was still up for it. I had to say yes, it's been my ambition as a Sunderland fan to see us play away in Europe at least once so if it happens its gonna cost me a fortune but I'll be there.

I went to see us play Vitesse Arnheim and NAC Breda, had a great week but it doesn't really count.

Same here chief, I'd go back home for that. Like you, it'll cost me an arm and a leg though!

I went to Alkmaar away a few seasons back and it was class.

I've got a load of Mag supporting mates back home who've been all over Europe, I am jealous I wont lie.

Going into Europe to play unfashionable East European teams etc hasn,t done a lot of English sides much good in the past. Instead of kicking on lots of them have flopped in the league because the strain of competing in too many matches shows up too many shortcomings in the in depth quality of their squads.

We have the best squad we,ve had in living memory, and it would be able to achieve a higher league position out of Europe than ever it would achieve if it were to be distracted by midweek trips to say Tbilisi or Sofia.

Its only the Champions League thats really worthwhile, and being in the Eufa Cup would stop us ever being in a position to achieve that level.

I would much prefer domestic success to a mainly unprofitable run in the eufa cup

This is what's pushing me over the edge.
I remember Quinn, in the early days. saying there was always something defeatist and underdog about Sunderland Football Club.

I agree with Smixsell that there is something different now.

The 'chicken & egg' question is, do we wait until we have something definite to cheer for or be involved in cheering the players on to making that change?

In the 'terrace' days I remember the crowd, en masse, thinking "Bollocks to this, we're losing and we need to make a difference," and a huge noise would spread through the crowd.

Are we still able to take that risk and believe we can make a difference knowing we may be knocked back in our enthusiasm?

Or, as people have said, have we had so many false dawns that we don't have it in us any more to go out a limb and risk it breaking?

competing against every side in the league home and AWAY , going away and having a right go like last week and no more of this i surrender at the top side . We seem to have taken care of a lot of this so far . The skunk result hopefully is freak result (most sides get 1 or 2 ) unfortunately ours was v that lot

How do you actually feel about the squad and the manager at the moment, after last week's performance? Not having a go but you were the most negative about transfer dealings/Bruce/tactics. Have you adjusted your perceptions or do you think we are one loss from being shite? Do you see a blip coming?

When the whistle goes in the last game of the season. Ive been a sunderland fan too long to start thinking things are going to happen. I will wait till its all nailed on before getting myself too excited about things.

Study all our great away performances in the past few seasons, and you'll see that on the day, we haven't been a team that has been "wowed" by the opposition. Nerves play a huge (under-rated) part of football, and I seriously think this is what happened against the Skunks. I'm still keeping my feet on the ground though as we haven't had that dodgy spell part of the season yet. So I'll still stick to what I said and think we'll
finish around 10th.

This is mebbe's what I'm saying ...... does the apprehension of our fans have an affect on the players. Probably not, just a thought.
