Mine was Derby away in the Rumbelows Cup, Halloween 1990 lost 6-0 I was 12. Pretty much set the tone for the next 28 years
Midweek game. We arrived 10 minutes late and were already 0 v 1 down when we got into the ground. We said we would leave when it got to 0 v 5 and when it duly got to that score we did indeed leave. Drove all that way, put up with all the crap on the roads, arrived late and must only have seen 60 minutes of the game.

Norwich away 1990. 3-2 Defeat, Ruel Fox scored the winner for Norwich. I did go to Wembley for the play off final against Swindon.

I went to 7 away games that season and we lost them all.

Indeed it was midweek, we were 4-0 down at HT. I remember the away end was packed, during the second half the ball came over from one of if not our only shot in the game and the Sunderland supporters refused to give it back, throwing it around singing 'Lets all have a Disco' During the post match interviews with the managers, Dennis Smith commented that the Sunderland supporters managed to hold on to the ball longer than the players managed during the entire 90 minutes. We took a couple of batterings down there in the early 90's, I remember us getting twatted 5-0 on the opening day of the season once as well

Aye, one of my mates ran on the pitch and threw his scarf at Terry Butcher (?). We were absolutely shocking that day.

Pretty certain we were wearing yellow which was fitting for that side on that day. I think Derby had spent an absolute fortune (relative to then anyway) and were trying to buy their way out of the league. I recall they had Marco, Paul Kitson, Craig Short and Tommy Johnson who cost them a fair whack. We were awful back then...and now

1 November 1986. A 2-1 defeat away to Sheffield Utd. My mates Dad drove us down. Paul Atkinson scored a screamer that was disallowed and Iain Hesford almost scored! His kick bounced over their keeper and went wide by a couple of yards. Strange how I can remember this stuff from over 30 years ago, yet I can barely remember what I did yesterday! My next away game was almost a year later at Scarborough in the Sherpa Vans Trophy. We humped them 3-0!

Wembley 1998, Sunderland 4-4 Charlton.

The first league away I went to was Burnley 2004. We had the full end and won 2-1 thanks to Gary Breen and Marcus Stewart.

Boxing Day 1971 3-2 Win at Hull City, Pitt, Tueart & Hughes. Mini Bus from Houghton. Happy Days! Month earlier went my mate & his dad to watch the Mags at Leicester 3-0 defeat for our near neighbours. Also Happy Days.

5th September 1997 - Bradford away. http://www.thestatcat.co.uk/Match.aspx?MatchID=232&LU=S&LUID=119

A Friday night game. Picked up straight from school by me dad who was going through his touring caravan phase. We were stopping at some caravan site on top of some Yorkshire dale somewhere as we were down for the weekend to visit me stepma's family. Ended up running late due to caravanning issues and missed the first goal but it was class anyway. Won 4-0, with our lot singing throughout. Choice numbers included...

Bought a flute
Let's all have a disco, la la la la
Let's all have a curry, la la la la

7th October 1978, Sheffield United away, got beat 3-2. I was a 15 year old with a couple of mates and my mates dad. I had been going to home matches since I was 8.

We were sat with the Sheffield in the corner next to the Sunderland fans, as we couldn't get in there. Our fans sounded tremendous and by my recollection it was our first rendition of "Can't Help Falling in Love." Despite sitting with Blades fans, we went nuts when Gary Rowell gave us the lead but then Alex Sabella tore us a new one and United won easily. Despite the defeat I loved it and made it to a few more away games that season.

Was this the same game where Armstrong managed to knee the ball over their bar from half a yard out in the last minute? Typical of how that side played that season.

I was at that one. Our supporters were amazing that night. I think Mick Harford was playing for them. He said we were making that much noise he had to keep checking the scoreboard to make sure they were winning

They were class, the away end was bouncing. I think it was the one thing which stopped my old man from taking us home at HT. The atmosphere was superb.
