Few pre-season friendlies at Darl0 and Hartlepool early 80s but first proper away game was at Norwich, March 85, the week before the Milk Cup Final. We won 3-1,(Ian Wallace scored I recall) and Norwich were dire so remember (alas) thinking we had a good chance the following week...

Night game? Foggy? Was there, not many others were mind

Following on from the earlier brilliant thread about your first ever lads game, most of them will have been home games. When was your first away game and how old were you and any memories etc.

Mine was 14/9/1974 for the short but exciting trip to York I think with John Tennick with me da looking after me. I was nine and a couple of months shy of my 10th birthday. I see bairns nowadays with a few seasons of away trips at the same age, but it’s a lot different now compared to then!

We won the game thanks to a very late Vic Halom scrambled effort in front of our huge support at what I presume was the Bootham Crescent End? Vic was my childhood hero anyway, but this cemented his position as my favourite ever SAFC player.

Not including the play off final (it was a neutral venue so not a proper away game). Bolton November 98, won 3-0

Derby away 2002

Seem to remember us getting battered before Quinn got us a late winner

I was mascot that day

Sheff Wed 2-2 about 1983/84 ish. I was only a kid so can't really remember anything.

1st proper away was Blackburn about 1988. 1-1 with Monty getting an 88th min equaliser and we nearly scored a winner. Went with the Trainors from Coxhoe (I'm sure a few on here will know them).

First was Arsenal in 1983, won 2-1, Tony Adams debut and Colin West got the winner I think. Was visiting relatives though so first proper one was with my Dad on the train against Sheff Utd in 86/87 lost 2-1. First with the lads was Sheff Utd, nov 90 and won 2-0, Gabbiadini got both.

Anfield May 1981. I think we had to win to stop up. An incredible day , it seemed like thousands made the trip , all you could see were cars and coaches with red and white scarves etc. Motorway services rammed with fans. Everyone though seemed hugely optimistic that we were going to win. Fans tremendous from start to finish and obsolute bedlam when Stan Cummins got the only goal. What a way to start !

Man utd cup game for me,if only Monty had stayed down,we might have won that game,,saying that as far as I can remember footballers didn't play that way back then, then me nxt one was Leeds rd 2nd replay, atrocious night it was, weather wise and result wise, seems like a lifetime ago

Sad to say - I really don't know. It would be 75/76/77 - I'm guessing 75-76 - the promotion season, but we went to 3 or 4 IIRC and I really don't know where first. Knacked by having been to non-Sunderland games at various places since being a nipper. Thinking the first would have to be Blackburn/York/Bolton - as that season was all going so well at home I'm doubting it was defeat at Bolton though. Bit shit that - given I also don't know for sure my first home game as I was pre-school and we visited the area to relatives more than once per year since I was born (though with help on here I've got a strong candidate).

Sid James’ Park early 1960s. We won 3-0. Wyn Davies made his debut for them and George Kinnell for us. Mulhall got the first. Neil Martin scored and I cannot remember the third scorer. I do remember getting punched in the face on the way out of the ground. Walked home to Felling.

Bolton away 1983 in the FA cup. Won 3-0, hell on all over the ground, running battles throughout the stands. I was 13 sitting in the home stand with a load of Lancashire mental cases. Good day though.

Mine was Derby away in the Rumbelows Cup, Halloween 1990 lost 6-0 I was 12. Pretty much set the tone for the next 28 years

West Brom away under O’Neill. Lost 4-0. Decent day out in Lichfield but mostly remember some fat fans arguing with each other about how much it was ‘like Steve Bruce’.
