Your barcelona excuses

I'm so glad there's no prospect of a Stoke Barca match in the foreseeable future.

Barca really are a class act not making excuses even in the match report on the official website.

A very fair report I feel.

The Gunners bounce back (2-1)Jordi Clos

Barça have lost away to Arsenal in a vibrant Champions League quarter final first leg. Two late goals cancelled out Villa’s opener, but all has yet to be decided at the Camp Nou.

Arsenal and Barça joined forces to provide London with a footballing feast this evening. Both sides stayed faithful to their typical styles, seeking to dominate the possession and playing ambitiously, and as a result we were able to enjoy an open, unpredictable encounter that had a little bit of everything, including an unexpected twist at the end. Barça had opened the scoring through David Villa, but Arsenal never gave up and got their reward with two late goals that mean they’ll have a head start when the two sides meet again at the Camp Nou.

English threat

Arsenal took the imitative, and were all over Barça for the first ten minutes. Their direct approach created the first chance for Van Persie in the 6th minute, but Valdés managed to get in the way. It took a good fifteen minutes before the FCB midfield finally settled into their rhythm, and started producing the kind of combination plays that defences find so hard to deal with. They may have made an impressive start, but Arsenal were struggling now, and Leo Messi looked to have scored when he broke through one-on-one with goalkeeper Szczesny, but his deft finish missed the target by inches.

Villa finds the net

Barça were finally showing their class, and Arsenal were pushed further and further back, having been forced to surrender possession to the Catalan side and rely instead on the counter attack. A brilliant defensive header from Abidal prevented Arsenal from doing just that, shortly before Villa finally opened the scoring by latching onto the end of a Messi assist. As the Emirates was subjected to an FCB onslaught reminiscent of the one last year, Szczesny was twice called upon to prevent Pedro from making it two, while Messi had a goal very questionably disallowed for offside.

The comeback

Arsenal started looking more and more dangerous as the second half wore on, and for a long period had Barça desperately against the ropes. Piqué and Abidal, well shielded by Busquets, were largely to thank for keeping the Premiership side at bay before Messi once again silenced the Emirates with what looked like a goal in the 67th minute, but his effort had only struck the side-netting.

It looked like Barça had finally regained control of the game and a second goal was very much on the cards. But then the game took an unexpected turn for the worst. In the 78th minute, Van Persie lost his defender and surprised Valdés with a powerful strike from the narrowest of angles to put the sides back level. Shortly after, Arshavin finished off a move that had been brilliantly started by Nasri and in just five minutes Arsenal had turned around a game that Barça looked to have won. For the neutral, it was a thrilling finale to a fantastic game of football, and the good news is that it will all be happening again in the second leg at the Camp Nou. Barcelona are going to have to bite back.

Well I didn't say that they wouldn't get into their half. What I would say is Barcelona keep the ball far, far better than Arsenal, so that comparison is fairly redundant. Arsenal are much more of a counter attacking side than Barca.

Barca would, undoubtedly, play sides like Stoke off the park 99 times out of 100. They would probably have 75%+ possession, so while Stoke would get into Barca's half, it would be occasional. Perhaps they'd score a goal, but that's about it.

Imagine that Barca midfield and forward line up against the cloggers Stoke have.

Yes, I know you didn't. I think Barca would win, even at Stoke. They would cause Stoke far more problems than the other way round.

But it would be interesting to see.

Not so much a different style, as a different sport.

 Very true.

It'd be interesting to see Barca play a season in England, or for that matter Real Madrid. Spain has become as bad as Scotland for being a two horse race. Are the rest of the sides that bad? Or are they just so much better than the rest? I certainly don't think La Liga is the best in the world as it suffers in the way England does from having one or two excellent sides and a paucity of quality beneath.

I love it when some side like Bolton play them. They dance around like fannies playing tippy-tappy then Bolton win a lucky corner and BOOOOOOOOM it's a rough and tumble goal from a set piece, and Wenger starts crying.

Meanwhile, Donetsky Shakhtyor (sp) are ticking along nicely under the radar, mind you Roma were awful last night.

Did you see this game? I noticed the result amidst the Arsenola wankery, 5 goals and a 3-2 away win surely signals Ukraine as the best league in the world ;)

Don't be so pathetically pedantic. Espanyol are Spain's 'Stoke' and got hammered 5-1 off them. Look at Barca's average possession this season and tell me how Stoke would go about beating them.

Inter where like stoke of the champions league last season what happend there. Barca are a fantastic football side the best in the world on there day but they have weakness and inter and mourinhio found it and beat them. They can be beat and dont like the more in your face roughness that inter brought to the table last season. Inter wouldnt know what hit them away to stoke ffs so i dont know how barca would react. f***ing hell even us sunderland afc called them hoofball wwe wrestlers ffs and we have had some shit teams in modern times.

Stoke would never get the ball

Have you learnt nowt from our game with them they very rarely need the fucker.

Wow, Mourinho's TREBLE winning Inter lowered to the level of Stoke.

Barcelona are consistently poor (results wise) in Europe under Pep. They dominated the game for around 2/3, as shown by the number of passes completed and superiority of possession.

After last night P31 W17 D11 L3

One win and one semi final in two seasons so far.

What a pile of shite they are.

I'd say most of the teams in La Liga have one or two very good players. Some teams have a few good players too, but all of the teams below the top two carry a few really crap ones. This season look at Athletic Bilbao for a La Liga equivalent of Sunderland. Sometimes great but sometimes gettin beat of ordinary teams (especially away)

Apologies. I missed AWAY from home. Makes my post look ridiculous  I'm in defence of Barca. They haven't won an away leg under Pep in the knockout stages though

Interesting. Who would you say was better then, between Athletic and the lads? Or are they about equal?

Excuses?

They are clearly the best team in the world, no one compares.
They are one of the best teams of all time.
They still have the chance to become the greatest team of all time

(Still cheered when Arseholin scored like, can't help pulling for the english team.)

Right, I see, it does a bit. :-D

The only tie they lost, though, was to Inter last year - to an offside goal. Not a bad record.

It's a difficult question. The players from Athletic I would love to have at Sunderland are Javi Martinez,Iraola and Muniain. Maybe Llorente, but I'll wait till end of season to make my mind up about that one. Athletic's defence is shockingly bad (Iraola apart) and their midfield full of inconsistant players. And they start with Toquero.

I reckon we'd win at home and they'd win at their place but we'd be more likely to sneak an away point/win, so we just shade it.

They lost 3-1 in Milan. It was a deserved win for Inter imo.

They have also lost 5 times in Europe now altogether, with Pep as manager.

Cheers. I think calling one league or another 'the best in the world' is ultimately pretty pointless. Each league has its strengths and weaknesses. I wish more would be like Germany though.

will probably go through in the second leg, similar to last season

I watched them alot that season and they were very well setup as always under mourinhio. He sets teams up to fuck over the other side rather than to win the game out right most of the time ala stoke.

Why do people need an excuse to enjoy watching a superb footballing side?
totally agree. i find the criticism strange.

how many times has there been a thread on here about long ball football and how crap it is?

barca play the game as it should be played and some take delight in slagging it off
