XP upgrade to win 7? Advice & price?

My folks recently gave me an old laptop with WinXP on it. I can't even watch Netflix or install Steam on it, so I'm going to upgrade the OS to make it useful for something other than solitaire and basic browsing.

It's an AMD Turion64, 1.61 GHz, with 1GB of RAM and a 110GB HD.

1. What OS will be the best fit for it? (Will it even run Win7 or should I get a copy of Vista for it?)
2. How much am I going to have to pay for a suitable OS for it?
3. Where should I buy from? (I notice I can buy from eBay for about £3 but concerned it might be dodgy). Does anyone here own an extra (legit and unused) license key they could let me have cheaply?

Thanks in advance.

And yes I do plan to format the fucker.

You can Download Win 7 on many torrent sites with it already activated, Microsoft are not really interested in using resources in trying to control this, when they will stop supporting it in 2020.Your main problem might be the graphics card not man enough.

Ah, I'm looking for a legit way of doing it. Thanks though.

Graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce Go 6150 apparently.

That graphics card is circa 2006/2007, I doubt it would be very good mate.I wouldn't throw money at that bud, buy a cheap laptop is
your best bet.

Can't afford one, and I mainly want to use it for Netflix and possibly a few games that don't use the graphics so much, like FM.

I have proper computer for everything else. This is just for watching TV shows in bed or taking to the missus' house to keep me occupied when she's going to be at work some of the time I'm there.

i can get you a legit key from my MSDN subscription but its gonna run like dogshit on that, google chrome will stutter with netflix and pornhub...

best advice take out gadget insurance with ya bank....and tell them its an alienware x3775 then set that one on fire

Not a sniff FM will run on that

It's not the end of the world if it doesn't. Netflix is the main thing I want it for tbh.

You reckon it won't even run Netflix?

How much would you want for the legit key?

Not really true these days though, the various Linux derivatives have turned even more bloated than windows.

Minimum recommended spec for Ubuntu Desktop is 2GB of RAM.

Minimum recommended spec for Win 7 (32) is 1GB RAM

Depends on what you're doing with Ubuntu and whether you go with the full thing or something like Lubuntu, which can run with 512MB. My experience through work is that I can run an Ubuntu VM through VirtualBox with 1GB RAM and it's fine for basic things whereas Windows7 crawls a bit. The other thing is that a base Ubuntu install will use a lot less HD than Windows will.
