WTF is that?

I was speaking to my dad about this as he used to work at the papermill when he was young.

He said there was a deep well there (100ft or so) and also a separate narrow borehole at the same location.

Apparently as an apprentice they used to lower him down the well on a swing to a platform which had 2 large pumps on it (the alternative to being lowered down was an awful lot of steps to climb!). There was a trapdoor through the platform and he used to have to lower sample tubes through that to get samples from the water below.

He says the water was quite salty and if it they pumped too much it became too salty to use so they had to check it regularly. The water softeners were down at the main mill site.

He doesn't know how the water got from there to the main mill site, but assumes it was gravity fed down a pipeline.
